CAN THE WEATHER AFFECT JOINT PAIN? Did you ever hear anyone say, I know it’s going to rain because my head is killing me!? Or maybe you’ve felt your own joints ache when the temperature outside drops, it becomes more humid, precipitation occurs or is going to and temperature. Well, the surprising news is that person who claimed of their head hurting and/or you noticing your joints ache more when the weather changes just might be onto something! There a few theories on ho...w changes in weather affects joint pain, and they many have to do with changes in barometric pressure. People with arthritis may be sensitive to changes in barometric pressure because when the cartilage that cushions the bones inside a bone joint is worn away, nerves in the exposed bone might pick up on changes in pressure. Another reason why barometric pressure can affect how your joints feel is by making your tendons, muscles and any scar tissue expand and contract and that can cause joint pain. Low temperatures can also make the fluid inside joints thicker . . .so they feel stiffer. You might also feel more pain when the weather is cold and rainy out because you may not get as much activity if you choose to stay inside and lounge. The lack of activity can lead to joint pain and stiffness. If you suffer from weather-related joint pain . . .here are a few things you can try to alleviate the symptoms: If the temperature drops, try to keep yourself warm by taking a warm bath or a paraffin bath. You can also ask your doctor about medications, keep a healthy weight and stay active and don’t strain your joints if you don’t have to. As with any kind of joint pain, if you don’t know what it is for certain, call Synergy Orthopedic Specialists Medical group to find out at (858)-412-6080. See more

For many people, Memorial Day is a time to celebrate freedom and have fun, in more ways than one. The official meaning of Memorial Day is to salute the U.S. Veterans who sacrificed to preserve and protect us. Memorial day is the unofficial kick-off for summer . . .which means a lot of cookouts and get togethers. This also translates into Memorial Day weekend being one of the busiest weekends for travel. Please follow these tips to keep the roads SAFE this holiday weekend:... 1. Avoid alcohol. Don’t drink and drive. Talk to your teens about the repercussions of drinking and driving. 2. Keep your tires properly inflated. The hot roadway can take it’s toll on tires. 3. WEAR YOUR SEATBELT! 4. Keep your windshield clear and make sure your wipers are in good shape so your view will be unobstructed. 5. Follow speed limits (unless otherwise indicated) and follow all traffic rules. 6. Have a happy, healthy and safe holiday weekend!! See more
