NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH is the perfect time to talk about how food affects our teeth. Cutting back on certain foods and incorporating more of others into our diets can have a big impact on oral health, so let’s take a closer look. The Bad: Acids, Sugars, and Starches The bad bacteria in our mouths love feasting on the remnants of any sugary or starchy foods we eat. After a big meal, those bacteria then excrete smelly compounds and acid onto our teeth, causing bad breath, e...roding our tooth enamel, and increasing the risk of tooth decay. When we eat or drink acidic things like soda or fruit juice, we’re applying acid directly to our teeth! The Good: Dairy, Produce, and Proteins Fruits and veggies are high in water and fiber, which makes it harder for the sugar and acid in them to harm our teeth than when we only drink the juice. Dairy products like milk, plain yogurt, and cheese are low in sugar and high in protein and calcium, both of which are important for healthy teeth and gums. Finally, poultry, fish, nuts, and eggs are other great sources of protein and they also contain phosphorus! #nationalnutritionmonth #dentalhealth

MARCH IS WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH, so we’re celebrating the first female dentist in North America: Dr. Emeline Roberts Jones, born in 1833. Like many dentists in the mid-1800s, she didn’t receive a formal degree, and because she was a woman, she likely would have been rejected by the newly established all-male dental colleges anyway. At age 18, Emeline married a dentist, Dr. Daniel Jones. He scoffed when she expressed interest in his profession, claiming that dentistry was no o...ccupation for the frail and clumsy fingers of a woman. She must have taken those words as a personal challenge, because she trained herself using extracted teeth behind his back until even he had to acknowledge her skill, at which point she became his partner. After Daniel died in 1864, Emeline continued practicing dentistry to support their two children. She traveled around Connecticut with her portable dentist’s chair until finding a permanent home for her practice in New Haven, where she worked until retiring in 1915. Emeline Roberts Jones paved the way for generations of women in dentistry. She received numerous awards and honors over the course of a career spanning six decades, including being made an honorary member of the National Dental Association. #womenshistorymonth #dentistry
