READ TO BOTTOM... Heavy carries. Another favorite of ours for one main reason: Nothing builds structure like heavy carries. ... It’s the non-sexy stuff that doesn’t look as cool on Instagram, but, will get you the best return over almost anything you can do. It’s simple...pick up something heavy and carry it for a predetermined distance. Or, just pick it up and see how far you can carry it. What do I mean by builds structure? The structural muscles that support everything else in your body. For example, your glutes are stabilizer muscles. You need strong glutes to get up from a seated position, to walk over uneven terrain, to carry a deer, to push a wheelbarrow, or to squat heavy weight. Most people try to skip to the squat without the structure in place to do so and end up with back injuries because they have no glutes. Has your back ever hurt squating? Does it hurt your back to run? Or hike a steep trail? Wanna activate your glutes? Pick up a heavy sandbag and walk 400m. And do it again tomorrow. What about your obliques or your lats? Or your pecs? Have you ever tried to lift something heavy overhead and ended up with shoulder pain as a result? Or, even just supporting or stabilizing weight overhead? Maybe you should develop the muscles that support your shoulder capsule. The lack of overhead stability can often be traced to a lack of obliques or core stability. Carry a heavy yoke or farmers handles and see if you don’t begin to notice your core getting stronger. Or, carry some weight overhead(correctly and safely of course) and you’ll start to see your lats and pecs getting stronger. It really is simple. The thing that is probably missing from your training/exercise program is heavy carries. Do it often. And do it heavy. Do it for the rest of your life. They’ll find every weakness you have. For sure. 2. Life seldom comes with perfectly chalked handles. 3. They’ll make you farm boy strong! 4. They’re lower skill and a new person can learn to squat with a sandbag relatively quickly without loading the spine. 5. It’s much easier to squat naturally with a sandbag vs. other implements used in fitness. 6. Carrying heavy objects are a great way to build structural strength for any individual. To sum it up, sandbags are a great way to get fit! Our goal in our General Physical Preparedness(GPP) classes as well as our individualized training is to get regular people as prepared for life as we can. Sandbags are one way we accomplish that. We like to say, Low Barrier, High Reward. Meaning, anyone can walk in the door and learn movements quickly and immediately start seeing their fitness increase.
