(English Below) ! (ASHA) SSTC ... ", , , , , " SSTC Happy American Better Hearing and Speech Month 2020! May has been the month dedicated in the United States to celebrate Better Hearing and Speech. This year 2020, the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) focused on "Communication at Work" by raising awareness about communication disorders and the impact of the Covid-19 virus. From SSTC, we want to raise awareness about the role of the speech language pathologist. Speech language pathologists work to "prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults". SSTC is dedicated to work collaboratively with the Cambodian government and other NGOs to institute a speech and language pathology degree program in Cambodia, where there is not yet the profession of Speech Pathology, so that we can better serve the Cambodian population. (Khmer below) We are delighted to have partnered with The Speech and Hearing Project (Australia), The Trinh Foundation (Vietnam) and the School of Audiology, Speech & Language Therapy, University of Ghana. These three organisations have created an exciting training package for speech-language pathologists, or those working in the field, in low-middle income countries. The training was developed with funding from Speech Pathology Australia, and aims to explore and understand e...thical thinking and decision making amongst those working in a speech-therapy related clinical setting. SSTC are so excited to be running this online workshop with our trained dysphagia clinicians, and have completed the first half already. It is facilitated by one of our Speech-Language Pathologists and the outcomes and feedback given to the workshop developers. This will help shape future training and understanding of ethical speech-therapy practice in low-middle income countries. Here's a photo of us connecting virtually! Watch this space for further updates. () () (Audiology) () SSTC ! !

English Underneath SSTC Alexia Young Sarah Wallace Sarah Alexia, Sarah Alexia SSTC FEES ... FEES FEES Sarah Alexia SSTC would like to extend huge thanks and gratitude to Alexia Young and Sarah Wallace from the UK. Sarah and Alexia are two highly experienced Speech and Language Therapists who volunteered with us last week. This is Sarah’s 3rd and Alexia’s 2nd visit to support SSTC’s activities. This time, we worked together to develop FEES competencies relevant to the Cambodia context, work-shopped our FEES report format and devised case studies to deepen the critical thinking of our trainees. Additionally, they provided our Speech-Language-Pathologists with expert training in FEES interpretation and scoping. Thank you so much Sarah and Alexia!

English Underneath , / - FEES ,, ... ! Creating clinical, informational and teaching materials in Khmer is a challenging task. We have a dedicated Khmer-English interpreter/translator on our team. Here, Annie and Dalin are busy at work translating slides for our clinical FEES teaching materials. The technical English vocabulary and concepts take time, research, discussion, and multi-level checking to ensure we get the right Khmer translation. This is a great example of the complexity and depth of work required to bring Speech Therapy to Cambodia. We are also eating jujube, a Cambodian fruit, while we work. Tastes like mini, sweet and soft apples!

English Underneath (Screen) ICU SSTC (dysphagia) ICU ... SSTC ! We now have 2 more nurses able to independently perform swallow screens on 2 different ICUs. Join us in congratulating Mr. Sa and Mrs. Kunthea. We're saying well done because they have completed months of teaching, exams and clinical practice with SSTC. Soon, they will also be able to complete full dysphagia evaluations. They work on ICUs and so often care for very unwell patients with stroke or brain injury. They have now acquired clinical skills previously lacking on their wards. These skills will enhance their patients' care and safety. SSTC is so happy to work with you Kunthea and Sa!
