Did you recently adopt or are fostering a shelter dog? We’d like to help set you up for success! As exciting as it is to bring your new dog home, the absolut...e best time to set your dog and yourself up for long term success starts from the moment the dog arrives. One of our Rescue partners, @bluemandog.inc, has put together a excellent resource with tips for bringing a new dog home. We take some important pointers from their page, New Dog Help, which you can read in full on their site https://bluemandog.org/new-dog-help/ When bringing a shelter dog (or any new pet!) home, you need to be mindful that everything is new to the dog including yourself and they don’t immediately understand that you adopted them to give them a great life. It’s going to take your new dog a bit to unwind from the tension of being at the loud, and oftentimes stressful, shelter. The most important thing is to have a very simple routine at first, including clear rules and boundaries. This is just as important as being loving, so set some basic house rules for your dog to follow from day 1, as it will help them understand what is expected of them in their new life. Establish the rules and routine you want (whether they’re allowed on the furniture/in the kitchen or not, when and where to sleep, when to eat, etc.), but don’t do much with them yet. As tempting as it is to snuggle your new buddy, it is so much more beneficial to give them plenty of space to decompress. Let them observe and process. Don’t take them to the dog-park yet, or to work, or to crowded cafes. Don’t let all your friends pet and cuddle and play with the dog just yet - it may not seem like it, but this is overwhelming for most dogs. All that can wait until the dog has had time to settle and adjust and learn to trust you (not to mention you’re getting to know your new dog!). Build those things up in increments. Remember, Making Friends Takes Time! Bringing a dog into a home with another dog or introducing your dog to new dogs, should be done slowly also! Making a new doggo friend is one of life’s greatest pleasures, and we wish you and pup all the joy in the world! *Image from rescuedogs101.com*

Three year old Bruit is RED ALERTED and URGENT!! Bruit entered the shelter as a stray in August and unfortunately, no one ever came for him. He is not ad...justing to shelter life too well and per staff notes, has been exhibiting poor kennel behavior. According to staff, he seems to be ok being leashed and unleashed, though he appears to be sensitive to being touched on or near his head. Bruit is also noted to be strong on leash and reactive (lunging and barking) toward other dogs when walking through the kennels. It does not look like Bruit has been out of his kennel for enrichment since entering the shelter, as his notes are only from intake and a medical exam. Since not much is known about his behavior, he needs an experienced adopter or rescue that can properly assess and address any behavioral quirks that he may have. Bruit is clearly stressed in the shelter and needs out ASAP!! If you can help set this kiddo up for success outside of the shelter environment, contact the shelter TODAY!! Is he South LA Animal Shelter's #SexiestDogAlive? If you like the athletic, well-built, rough and rowdy type with the cutest little eyes, then YES, EINSTEIN i...s the dog for you! At 4 years old, this SOCCER STUD has got it going on, and needs a person who will spend time taming his rather rambunctious personality. But he's a good boy at heart, who has shown his #ShelterAunties that he WILL settle down for the right one. Could that be you? We hope so, because Einstein is recently back at the shelter and RED-LISTED following an adoption breakup. He loves his toys, and resource guarding is a bad habit of his. So, he bit someone who either wasn't aware or didn't know to be wary of that. Now, we know he can't just have everything he wants when he wants it, which is why Einstein needs a patient human or rescue who will invest time in the training it takes to teach him to do better. He's come a long way in the shelter, and can go even further in a loving home. Thank you to SLA Through My Lens for the editorial spread, and catch video of his ball-handling skills in the comments below! Available for adoption right now, TODAY. EINSTEIN #A1903436 #shelterdogsrock Chesterfield Square Center/South LA 1850 West 60th Street Los Angeles 90047 at Western and Slauson ~ Sun. 11-5 ~Tues.-Fri. 8-5 ~ 213.485.0303 ~ 323.565.2161

RESCUED BY @apurposefulrescue SOS!! URGENT!! Shelly #A1954266... ***Per Medical, Shelly has until End Of Day 4pm on 10/24/2020*** Please help by posting pledges and sharing with and contacting rescues!! My name is Shelly and I'm a Brown and Black, Intact Female. I'm about 10 years old. I weigh 36 pounds. I arrived at the shelter as a Stray, Pick Up on 9/30/2020. Medical Alert: Senior; cataracts- decreased vision; chronic skin/ear infection; slow, ataxic gait; multiple mammary tumors. Full medical record available upon request. Behavior Note: At her kennel she is quiet but eager to approach you for attention. She walked right into my leash and out of her kennel. Shelly moves slowly and cautiously, appears to not see too well but I was able to walk her out to the small dog yard. Wasn’t bothered by other dogs when walking thru the kennels. She sniffed and explored on her own and occasionally sought out affection from handlers. Allowed me to pet and touch her all over. Easy to walk back and rekennel. Nice dog. Call 1.888.452.7381 or 1.323.565.2161. Thank you!

Adorable Kitty Kat needs a home!! Looking for an awesome cat? DONUT is currently in foster. She loooves people and so needs a home where she will have your company. According to her foster family, she likes to pick things up in her mouth and bring them to you, she likes to be carried around to look at things like your bookshelves and pictures, and she sleeps in the most ridiculous positions. Sounds like a very cool cat. Let me know if you want to meet her or call 888-452-7381! Her ID # is #A1936416
