>> CALL FOR TOWEL DONATIONS << We go through towels at SLREH at an incredible rate. If you have any old towels that you are looking to get rid of, we would be very appreciative of the donation. We use the towels for our foal patients and to dry our surgery patients when they have recovered from anesthesia. Please feel free to drop off towels at the hospital, and thank you so much for considering us!

A deserving and welcome congratulations to our own Dr. Korin Potenza for successfully completing her residency in the American College of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. This has been an ongoing residency under the mentorship of Dr. Wayne McIlwraith who has served as her residency advisor throughout the process. She managed to devote time and energy for off-site rotations, studying, and publication of her paper (Comparing racing performance following arthroscopic surger...y of metacarpophalangeal/metatarsophalangeal and carpal joints in Thoroughbred racehorses rehabilitated using conventional and underwater treadmill therapies). It comes as no surprise that she passed the arduous board exams on her first attempt. With her new Diplomate status in the American College of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (Dipl. ACVSMR; https://vsmr.org) we know that Dr. Potenza will continue to drive the success of San Luis Rey Equine Hospital, Trifecta Equine Athletic Center & Ranch + Coast Equine Practice, while excelling in all aspects of veterinary medicine. Congratulations on an outstanding achievement - we are fortunate and excited to have such a progressive individual in our practice and community.

RENOVATION UPDATE #1: Anyone who has brought a horse in for a visit recently to SLREH will have noticed the place bustling with activity. We are excited to announce that we have jumped into phase A of a large scale renovation and development project. The hospital was first developed in the 1970's and is in need of a facelift; and we are outgrowing the space at an incredible rate thanks to the support of our incredible clients. As such, we are looking to renovate and expand, b...ringing you and your horses the state of the art facility that parallels the high quality medicine and care you have all come to expect here at SLREH. We are starting with an upgrade to our ICU facility, followed by development of a new isolation facility, new orthopedic and imaging building, and upgraded sports medicine complex. This transition is going to take time, performed in phases, and we have strategically planned it so as not to disrupt daily flow or patient care at the hospital. We ask that you check in at the office when you arrive, and be patient with the construction sites and restricted areas that you see around you. We promise, it is most certainly going to be worth it!

RENOVATION ANNOUNCEMENT: SLREH has been going strong since 1971. We have made many great advances over the years and have been adding in the newest in technical advancements and equipment every year since we took over ownership in 2013. But it has now come to the time for a much needed upgrade and expansion- we have outgrown the old bones of SLREH. So it is with excitement that we announce the start of much needed expansion and renovations here at SLREH. When you come in for a visit, please be patient as we rearrange the scenery over the coming year. We are looking forward to enhancing the facilities here at SLREH so they match the technological advancements and quality of care you've come to expect for your horses.

San Luis Rey Equine Hospital is proud to announce an addition to the team. Looking forward to having another surgeon come on board who is experienced in emergency medicine and surgery. Kirsty Husby, DVM, MS, DACVS-LA Dr. Husby was born in California, but spent her childhood years in South Africa. She grew up riding off-the-track-thoroughbreds (OTTBs) and participated in local jumper and eventing competitions. She moved back to the United States after high school, and lived i...n Washington state for several years before moving to Iowa and attending Iowa State University. She obtained a BS in Animal Science from Iowa State, and continued on at Iowa State for veterinary school. She always knew she wanted to work on horses, but during vet school she realized a great love for surgery and became a fixture in the equine hospital watching and assisting with surgeries any chance she could get. Following graduation from vet school she completed a one year internship at the University of Missouri, after which she remained on staff for an additional year doing ambulatory work and research on a synthetic cartilage implant in horse stifles. Dr. Husby then moved to Oregon and completed a Large Animal Surgery residency at Oregon State University. She also obtained a Masters of Science in Veterinary Science during her residency, evaluating the effects of low level laser light energy transmitted through equine skin to tendons. Dr. Husby remained on at Oregon State as a Clinical Instructor after her residency, and served as the Large Animal Emergency Clinician until November 2020 when she joined SLREH. In her spare time, Dr. Husby likes to spend time riding her OTTB, hiking and running with her 2 dogs, and exploring the outdoors.

COVID-19 Update from SLREH As an essential service to the public in the state of California, San Luis Rey Equine Hospital remains dedicated to your needs. With COVID-19 on the forefront of our thoughts, the team at San Luis Rey Equine Hospital is reaching out to let all of our clients and referring veterinarians know that we are committed to meeting the health care needs of your horses during this challenging time. Our hospital, surgical team, and ICU are staffed and fully co...mmitted to serve all horses necessitating medical attention with the highest standard of care. We are staying current on information as it pertains to COVID-19 and have implemented policies and procedures to keep our clients safe, as well as our veterinarians and staff. We are currently taking the following measures and ask that clients help by adhering to the following : We have asked any SLREH staff and veterinarians experiencing illness/symptoms to stay home and seek medical care. If you have an appointment scheduled with your horse and you are exhibiting flu like symptoms or have recently been exposed to COVID-19, please contact our office to reschedule your appointment. IF YOU ARE SICK, PLEASE FIND AN ALTERNATE HANDLER TO BRING YOUR HORSE IN TO BE SEEN. We are asking that you limit the number of people attending an appointment, or picking up/admitting a patient. We request that you do not bring additional people with you to your appointment. We also request limiting patient visits on all hospitalized horses at this time except in extreme circumstances. You can call (760) 726-4566 when you arrive and we will have someone meet you at your trailer to load/unload your horse so you do not need to enter the front office/facility. We want to limit people convening in our waiting room and your assistance with this would be very helpful. Dropping off your horse for its appointment and picking up once finished, or waiting at your truck and trailer will help minimize social contact. If you have an appointment, we will practice good safe physical distance and minimize person to person contact. We have increased our cleaning procedures and will continue to do so after every appointment. Please wash hands and/or use provided hand sanitizer upon entering and exiting our facility. As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, we will do our best to keep you informed of any further changes while continuing to care for your horses with the same high standard of care that you have come to expect. Thank you for being understanding and helping to keep our team healthy so we can continue to be here for all client and patient needs. Be safe. Gastroscopy case 3/3: This is a mass that was biopsied and diagnosed as a benign gastric polyp. It has the potential to cause obstruction at the cardiac sphincter, or entrance into the stomach from the esophagus, i.e. choke, especially if it continue to grow in size. Though further intervention was not pursued at this time due to no evidence of clinical signs, gastric polyps can be removed surgically via a transendoscopic route. #sanluisreyequinehospital #slreh #equinevets #gastroscopy #gastricpolyp

San Luis Rey Equine Hospital was SO PROUD to be a sponsor at the Fashionable Fillies Luncheon at Santa Anita this weekend. The function helped support The Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation which raises money for the men and women of the backside who work so hard on the racehorses we all love. It was a beautiful sunny Southern California day at the races and the team that put it together did a wonderful job with the luncheon. It was an honor to be included and to enjoy a day together at Santa Anita for a good cause! #sanluisreyequinehospital #slreh #santaanitapark
