December 17 O Wisdom of our God Most High, guiding creation with power and love: come to teach us the path of knowledge! ... We encourage you to make a new tradition this year by praying these antiphons on the seven nights before Christmas Eve to help you welcome the newborn King.

Things sleep deprived mothers ponder at 3:00 AM - Were baby Jesus's toes as delicious as my baby's toes? Did Joseph and Mary pretend to eat His toes just to hear his belly laugh? Did Joseph whisper to Jesus all the things he loves about Mary while she slept? Could he sense his father's selflessness? Did Joseph smoosh baby Jesus's chubby little cheeks and would tears leak from his eyes when the gravity of fatherhood hit him? What a gift it is to ponder the humanity of God's chosen Holy family. #yearofstjoseph #Repost @brickhouseinthecity

Wednesday November 4, 2020 MEMORIAL OF CHARLES BORROMEO, BISHOP Be bread for the world During the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, bishops dispensed Catholics from their Sunday obligation to attend Mass. While there were worries about the future of the Eucharist, some found ways to be the church in the world, helping the needy, feeding the hungry, and even doing such things as sending baked goods to local hospitals. During the plague of 1576, Cardinal Charles Borromeo... took to the streets of Milan to feed the hungry, going into personal debt to do so. Patron saint of cardinals, seminarians, and catechists, Saint Charles pray for us until the day when it is safe for all to gather again to share in the Eucharist. Today's readings: Philippians 2:12-18; Luke 14:25-33 Every one of you who does not renounce all your possessions cannot be my disciple. #takefiveforfaith Sunday Mass at Sacred Heart pre-covid 19 See more

A story constantly retold 69. The [Good Samaritan] parable is clear and straightforward, yet it also evokes the interior struggle that each of us experiences as we gradually come to know ourselves through our relationships with our brothers and sisters. Sooner or later, we will all encounter a person who is suffering. Today there are more and more of them. The decision to include or exclude those lying wounded along the roadside can serve as a criterion for judging every econ...omic, political, social and religious project. Each day we have to decide whether to be Good Samaritans or indifferent bystanders. And if we extend our gaze to the history of our own lives and that of the entire world, all of us are, or have been, like each of the characters in the parable. All of us have in ourselves something of the wounded man, something of the robber, something of the passers-by, and something of the Good Samaritan. PSALM 27 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? The LORD is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid?... One thing I ask of the LORD; this I seek: To dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, That I may gaze on the loveliness of the LORD and contemplate his temple. I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD. #dailyingodsword

Wednesday, Dec 16, 2020 ADVENT WEEKDAY Usher in a renewed Advent This Advent season is so different from any other in our lifetimes, and the holidays may not allow for worship in person with our faith communities or celebrations with beloved families. For many of us, this brings sadness to these Advent days as we mourn the loss of familiar rituals. The poetic words of theologian, educator, and civil rights leader Howard Thurman remind us that the work of Christmas is to find... the lost, heal the broken, feed the hungry . . . rebuild the nations and bring peace among others. Let us pray for the grace to overcome any disappointment we feel and focus on feeding the hungry, having compassion for the broken, and rebuilding the relationships around us. In such practices, we will find Advent hope and peace. TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 45:6b-8, 18, 21c-25 Luke 7:18b-23 The poor have the good news proclaimed to them. #takefiveforfaith

149. For a healthy relationship between love of one’s native land and a sound sense of belonging to our larger human family, it is helpful to keep in mind that global society is not the sum total of different countries, but rather the communion that exists among them. The mutual sense of belonging is prior to the emergence of individual groups. Each particular group becomes part of the fabric of universal communion and there discovers its own beauty. All individuals, whatever... their origin, know that they are part of the greater human family, without which they will not be able to understand themselves fully. Tuesday, Nov 03, 2020 MEMORIAL OF MARTIN DE PORRES, RELIGIOUS Create healing and harmony After the summer we’ve had, Martin de Porres is the perfect intercessor for the United States today, on Election Day. This famously humble Dominican friar, born of poverty and mixed racial background, is the patron saint of race relations and social justice. Plus, he trained as a doctor to hide an ability to perform miraculous cures. Ask for his help and healing to end our time of pandemi...c and social division. And ask to have a heart like his: Everything, even sweeping, scraping vegetables, weeding a garden, and waiting on the sick could be a prayer, if it were offered to God. TODAY'S READINGS: Philippians 2:5-11 Luke 14:15-24 Bring in here the poor and the crippled, the blind and the lame." #takefiveforfaith

Have you heard about the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn happening this month? Many are wondering if it has a connection with the Star of Bethlehem. On Dec. 21, the planets will appear a tenth of a degree apart in the night sky. This conjunction happens about every 20 years, but this year the two planets will appear the closest they have been in almost 400 years. To the naked eye, they will look like one, bright star, earning them the name the Christmas Star. ... We asked a Vatican astronomer if there could be a connection between this Christmas Star and the Star of Bethlehem? He said no. But added, it is a pretty sight that everyone should have a look at. Oh well. Will you look for the Great Conjunction on Dec. 21? #catholicnewsagency (: Daniel Ibanez/CNA)

68. The parable clearly does not indulge in abstract moralizing, nor is its message merely social and ethical. It speaks to us of an essential and often forgotten aspect of our common humanity: we were created for a fulfilment that can only be found in love. We cannot be indifferent to suffering; we cannot allow anyone to go through life as an outcast. Instead, we should feel indignant, challenged to emerge from our comfortable isolation and to be changed by our contact with ...human suffering. That is the meaning of dignity. Gospel LUKE 7:18-23 At that time, John summoned two of his disciples and sent them to the Lord to ask, Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another? ... When the men came to the Lord, they said, John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?’ At that time Jesus cured many of their diseases, sufferings, and evil spirits; he also granted sight to many who were blind. And Jesus said to them in reply, Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me. #dailyingodsword See more

148. In fact, a healthy openness never threatens one’s own identity. A living culture, enriched by elements from other places, does not import a mere carbon copy of those new elements, but integrates them in its own unique way. The result is a new synthesis that is ultimately beneficial to all, since the original culture itself ends up being nourished. That is why I have urged indigenous peoples to cherish their roots and their ancestral cultures. At the same time, though, I ...have wanted to stress that I have no intention of proposing a completely enclosed, a-historic, static ‘indigenism’ that would reject any kind of blending (mestizaje). For our own cultural identity is strengthened and enriched as a result of dialogue with those unlike ourselves. Nor is our authentic identity preserved by an impoverished isolation.[129] The world grows and is filled with new beauty, thanks to the successive syntheses produced between cultures that are open and free of any form of cultural imposition. Reading 1 Phil 4:4-9 Memorial of Saint Martin de Porres Brothers and sisters: Rejoice in the Lord always.... I shall say it again: rejoice! Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you. #dailyingodsword

Claiming the Light People who have come to know the joy of God do not deny the darkness, but they choose not to live in it. They claim that the light that shines in the darkness can be trusted more than the darkness itself and that a little bit of light can dispel a lot of darkness. They point each other to flashes of light here and there, and remind each other that they reveal the hidden but real presence of God. They discover that there are people who heal each other’s wounds, forgive each other’s offenses, share their possessions, foster the spirit of community, celebrate the gifts they have received, and live in constant anticipation of the full manifestation of God’s glory. -Henri Nouwen

The Lord hears the cry of the poor. I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall be ever in my mouth. Let my soul glory in the LORD;... the lowly will hear me and be glad. Look to him that you may be radiant with joy, and your faces may not blush with shame. When the poor one called out, the LORD heard, and from all his distress he saved him. When the just cry out, the LORD hears them, and from all their distress he rescues them. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves. The Lord hears the cry of the poor. Psalm 34 #dailyingodsword

Tuesday, Dec 15, 2020 ADVENT WEEKDAY The darkness before dawn Two days ago we celebrated Gaudete Sunday with refrains of rejoicing. Two days from now, we’ll begin to pray the O... Antiphonsseven days to laud the fast-approaching Messiah. What to make of this in-between time, when scripture shows Jesus chiding religious leaders and Old Testament prophets preach fire and brimstone? The day in which we now find ourselves is still night, wrote Saint Augustine. But the promise of salvation is sure. Keep your attention closely fixed on it, as you would on a lamp shining in a dark place until the first streaks of dawn appear. TODAY'S READINGS: Zephaniah 3:1-2, 9-13 Matthew 21:28-32 . Monday, Nov 02, 2020 COMMEMORATION OF ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED (ALL SOULS’ DAY) It is well with my soul This year, as we mourn the scores of those in our country and around the world who are dead from the pandemic, All Souls’ Day has a uniquely terrible gravity. We are not only grieving the loss of so many human lives but also the loss of what our lives were like before, and we are doing it without the same emotional support we might have had in physically closer times. Toda...y is an opportunity to pray and remember, and acknowledge the deep sadness that is so important to the healing process. Invite the God of hope to wipe away your tears. TODAY'S READINGS: Wisdom 3:1-9 Romans 5:5-11 or Romans 6:3-9 John 6:37-40 Everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life. #takefiveforfaith

Friends, there’s only one real sadness in lifenot to be a saint. But what does it mean to follow this path of righteousness? To follow the will of God, and God wills that we habitually direct our actions and thoughts to the good of others. Jesus says blessed are the merciful, the peacemakers, the pure in heart. Following Christ’s Sermon on the Mount leads to our beatitude living in this way leads to sainthood. #Repost @bishopbarron
