Congratulations to our Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen, who has been awarded an honorary Knighthood by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for his services to music and United Kingdom-Finland relations. This is a true personal honour, but more than that, it is meaningful to have artists honoured at a nationalat a historicallevel. It shows an appreciation of art-making as a necessary part of society. A recognition that culture is who we are, not just what we do. I am grateful for my time in London and throughout the UK with the Philharmonia Orchestra. I share this with them, says Esa-Pekka Salonen.

The first thing [the SFS] will play under [Salonen’s] leadership as music director, Nico Muhly's ‘Throughline,’ is a bellwether in the emerging genre of works created for the constraints, & possibilities, of music-making in our moment. #NYTimes Sfsymphony.org/Throughline

‘Throughline’ was created of this moment, and yes, for this moment, but it also is serving as our first opportunity to begin experimenting with what we can create and how to create it, as we begin our collaborations and imagine possibilities with the San Francisco Symphony.
