Well said by In the Heights director Jon M. Chu. Decisions about what movies are made are generally based on box office performance of other similar movies. Your vote is the ticket you buy at the box office. Watching a movie at home via a streaming service doesn't carry the same weight in the decision making process. If you want more movies that aren't based on comic books and superheroes then you need to support the types of movies you want to see by showing up at the theatre and buying a ticket. See you at the movies!

Reality television is awash in cooking and competition shows but none them quite delivers like Chris Hegedus and DA Pennebaker's 2010 documentary KINGS OF PASTRY. The collar awarded to the winners of the Meilleur Ouvrier de France (Best Craftsman in France) is more than the ultimate recognition for every pastry chef - it is a dream and an obsession. The 3-day competition includes everything from delicate chocolates to precarious six foot sugar sculptures and requires that th...e chefs have extraordinary skill, nerves of steel and luck. The film follows Jacquy Pfeiffer, founder of The French Pastry School in Chicago, as he returns to France to compete against 15 of France's leading pastry chefs. The filmmakers were given first time/exclusive access to this high-stakes drama of passion, sacrifice, disappointment and joy in the quest to have President Sarkozy declare them one of the best in France. Consider the LA Times thoughts/advice "Everything these men make - no women have ever competed for the pastry MOF - looks so mouth-watering that no one should dare watch this film on even a half-empty stomach." While [Spoiler Alert] the New York Times said "You'll be surprised by how devastating the collapse of a chocolate tower can be." KINGS OF PASTRY is available to stream on Fandor and Docsville. You might want to pick-up some pain au chocolat to enjoy with KINGS OF PASTRY. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1558972/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 See more

While there is no question that Woody Allen has behaved despicably in his life, we can't discount his contribution to the art of cinema as a filmmaker. Our next Rialto Recommends is his 1987 memory film RADIO DAYS featuring Mia Farrow, Dianne Weist, Julie Kavner, Wallace Shawn, and many more. RADIO DAYS is a nostalgic look at radio's golden age focusing on one ordinary family and the various performers in the medium. The Washington Post said "Childhood anecdotes and charmi...ng vignettes are set against bright-light, big-city sets, a-dazzle with beautiful players." While in his four-star review Roger Ebert wrote "RADIO DAYS is so ambitious and so audacious that it almost defies description. It's a kaleidoscope of dozens of characters, settings and scenes - the most elaborate production Allen has ever made - and it's inexhaustible, spinning out one delight after another. Although there is no narrative thread from beginning to end, there is a buried emotional thread. Like music, the movie builds toward a climax we can't even guess is coming, and then Allen finds the perfect images for the last few minutes for a bittersweet evocation of goodbye to all that." RADIO DAYS is streaming on HBOMax, DirectTV and Cinemax or is available to rent for a modest fee from Apple, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and others. Revisit one of our favorite Woody Allen films and enjoy RADIO DAYS. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093818/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 See more

Today is our 300th Rialto Recommends and our choice for today is Julie Taymor's 2007 film ACROSS THE UNIVERSE. The songs of the Beatles provide the sonic framework for this musical tale of romance, war and peace. When young British worker Jude (Jim Sturgess) sets sail for the United States in search of his father, he ends up meeting carefree college student Max (Joe Anderson) and his lovely sister, Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), along with a cast of eccentric characters. As Jude a...nd Lucy fall for each other, their relationship is threatened by the social upheaval that accompanies the Vietnam War. Variety said "Julie Taymor has delivered an audacious, idiosyncratic creation that plays like a riff on Hair with Fab Four cachet, stretching a thin love story across one tumultuous decade." While in the New York Times Stephen Holden declared "ACROSS THE UNIVERSE captured my heart, and I realized that falling in love with a movie is like falling in love with another person. Imperfections, however glaring, become endearing quirks once you've tumbled." ACROSS THE UNIVERSE captured the hearts of audiences far more than it did the critics. Check out this highly original film on Hoopla or rent it for a modest fee from Amazon, Vudu, Apple, GooglePlay, YouTube and others. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0445922/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 See more

Our next Rialto Recommends is a film that had a blink and you missed it theatrical release in the US in 2009 after debuting at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival. FIFTY DEAD MEN WALKING stars Jim Sturgess, Ben Kingsley, Kevin Zegers, and Rose McGowan and was directed by Kari Skogland. It's 1989, and in a Belfast torn apart by conflict and terrorism, petty criminal Marty McGartland is recruited by the British police to infiltrate the IRA. Guided by Special Forces o...fficer 'Fergus', McGartland gains unparalleled insight into the organization's dealings, providing his British handler with priceless, life-saving information. Based on a true story. FIFTY DEAD MEN WALKING is a gripping portrayal of Ireland's violent history, carried by the strong performances of its lead actors. Roger Ebert said "In this film, Skogland, as Kathryn Bigelow does in The Hurt Locker, demolishes the notion that women can't direct action." While the Los Angeles Times said "Terrific performances and an array of kinetic action scenes help distinguish FIFTY DEAD MEN WALKING from the seemingly endless stream of films about Northern Ireland's infamous era of sectarian violence known as the Troubles." FIFTY DEAD MEN WALKING is streaming on AmazonPrime or available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon. Our next Rialto Recommends is Alonso Ruizpalacios 2018 caper film MUSEO starring Gael Garcia Bernal. Mexico, 1985. Juan and Wilson, two perennial Veterinary students, perpetrate an audacious heist in the National Museum of Anthropology, running away with a loot of more than hundred invaluable pieces of Mayan art, unaware of the consequences of their outrageous act. MUSEO approaches familiar genre territory from a refreshing new perspective that's as exciting visually as it ...is narratively. The Wall Street Journal said "Museo is in part a caper film, a heist film, and while it leans on such classics as Topkapi and Rififi the robbery has its own signature and is done in a visual style that's hypnotic." While the Chicago Tribune wrote "MUSEO is the work of a genuinely creative directorial talent, and the early family scenes, richly detailed and shrewdly acted, provide just the right emotional context for this squabbling, indecisive gang of two." MUSEO is streaming on Kanopy or available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon, Vudu, YouTube GooglePlay or Apple. Check out MUSEO and share your thoughts with us in the comments. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4958448/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_5 See more

Thank you to the folks who have contributed to our GoFundMe campaign. Thank you! Thank you! Every additional dollar we raise helps provide more cushion to help us re-open and persevere through what is looking to be slow early days when we are allowed to re-open. You've probably seen the recent articles. One would-be blockbuster movie alone isn't going to save our industry. We are going to need all the help and support we can get to get back to a place where we can operate at ...or above a break-even level. Thank you all for your support. Something different, definitely indie for our next Rialto Recommends. URBANIA was released in the fall of 2000 after premiering in January of that year at Sundance. Welcome to URBANIA, where your life can change in a second. An enigmatic and engaging young man named Charlie has experienced a trauma, but he's doing his best to regain control of his life. When he notices a mysterious stranger at a distance, Charlie comes to believe he's found the key to his recovery. As he tr...avels the city in an effort to encounter the stranger again, he meets old intimates and new acquaintances. Variety raved "One of the boldest entries in 2000 Sundance Fest, Shear's impressive debut is a darkly intriguing drama that probes the nature of love and lasting effects of loss, beautifully played by Dan Futterman (who later became known as the scripter of Capote)" While the Austin Chronicle said "It’s impossible to shake the feeling of impending danger or imminent despair while watching URBANIA, which is why this bleakly shot film is so gut-wrenching to watch at times. That said, it’s worth it. Every step closer to unraveling the plot is a hard-fought, though intriguing, victory, and the more the pieces fall into place, the more visceral URBANIA becomes." URBANIA is streaming on Amazon Prime and Tubi. Not for the faint of heart, URBANIA is something special. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0182508/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3 See more

I don't know about you, but we need a distraction. Something silly, light, fun and not at all serious. Our next Rialto Recommends DOWN WITH LOVE starring Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor is just the ticket. Released in 2003, DOWN WITH LOVE takes place in 1962 in New York City when love blossoms between a playboy journalist and a feminist advice author. Entertainment Weekly called DOWN WITH LOVE "A succulent piece of postmodern fluff." Sounds like just what the doctor or...dered. While the Philadelphia Inquirer said "It's pure pleasure to watch Zellweger and McGregor bound across a set with the swinger confidence of Frank Sinatra taking the stage of the Sands Hotel." Pour yourself a cocktail and enjoy DOWN WITH LOVE available for a modest rental fee from Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and DirectTV. While the votes are being counted and the pundits pundit why not take enjoy a heartwarming story of friendship. Our next Rialto Recommends is Peter Chelsom's 1998 film THE MIGHTY. The film tells the story of a strong friendship between a young boy with Morquio's syndrome and an older boy who is always bullied because of his size. Adapted from the novel, Freak the Mighty, the film explores a building of trust and friendship. Kevin, an intelligent guy helps out Maxwell to imp...rove his reading skills. In return, Kevin wants Maxwell to take him out places since he is not allowed out unauthorized. Being the social outcasts of the town, Kevin and Maxwell come to realize that they are similar to each other and accept that they are "freaks" and nothing will stop them. Spirited and sweet with an emphasis on the healing power of friendship, THE MIGHTY is a modest charmer that comes by its whimsy honestly. Roger Ebert said "What I liked most about the movie is the way it shows that imagination can be a weapon in life." The Austin Chronicle said "Sentimental and quixotic, THE MIGHTY is good family fare; it's especially tuned in to the narrative needs of those suffering (in the past or the present) those distinctively adolescent agonies of feeling like a social misfit. THE MIGHTY is streaming on CBS All Access or available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon, Vudu and others. Check out THE MIGHTY and share it with the younger people in your life. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119670/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_6 See more

We return to the sometimes wacky world of the Coen Brothers for our next Rialto Recommends. RAISING ARIZONA was their second feature and first to be released a major studio - 20th Century Fox. When a childless couple of an ex-con and an ex-cop decide to help themselves to one of another family's quintuplets, their lives become more complicated than they anticipated. A terrifically original, eccentric screwball comedy, Raising Arizona may not be the Coens' most disciplined ...movie, but it's one of their most purely entertaining. Starring Holly Hunter, Nicholas Cage and John Goodman, RAISING ARIZONA is streaming Cinemax, MaxGo, and DirectTV or is available to rent for a modest fee from Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu, DirectTV and others. Check out RAISING ARIZONA and have some laughs with the Coen Brothers and a great cast! https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093822/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 See more

We finish up our thrills and chills Rialto Recommends suggestions with Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi/horror classic ALIEN. In deep space, the crew of the commercial starship Nostromo is awakened from their cryo-sleep capsules halfway through their journey home to investigate a distress call from an alien vessel. The terror begins when the crew encounters a nest of eggs inside the alien ship. An organism from inside an egg leaps out and attaches itself to one of the crew, causin...g him to fall into a coma. A modern classic, Alien blends science fiction, horror and bleak poetry into a seamless whole. Salon said "A haunted-house movie set in space, Alien also has a profoundly existentialist undertow that makes it feel like a film noir -- the other genre to feature a slithery, sexualized monster as its classic villain." While Entertainment Weekly said "In space, the famous tagline went, no one can hear you scream. In Alien, you can hear lessons for the sci-fi future in a great milestone from the recent past." ALIEN is streaming on HBO, HBOMax, and DirectTV or is available to rent for a modest fee from Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu and others. Whether you have never seen ALIEN and are watching it for the first time or you are watching it again, share your thoughts on this modern classic with us in the comments. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078748/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 See more

In honor of the passing of Sir Sean Connery we are choosing his 1990 film THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER as our next Rialto Recommends. Based on the popular Tom Clancy novel, this suspenseful movie tracks Soviet submarine captain Marko Ramius (Sean Connery) as he abandons his orders and heads for the east coast of the United States. Equipped with innovative stealth technology, Ramius' submarine, "Red October," is virtually invisible. However, when an American sub briefly detects t...he Russians' presence, CIA agent Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) sets out to determine Ramius' motives, fearing he may launch an attack on the U.S. Perfectly cast and packed with suspense, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER is an old-fashioned submarine thriller with plenty of firepower to spare. The LA Times said "You may not be limp from accumulated tension when this hunt is over, but its cautiously upbeat global message leaves a satisfying glow and it operates with a crackerjack premise." While Variety said "THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER is a terrific adventure yarn." THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER is streaming on Showtime and Sling or is available to rent for a modest fee from GooglePlay, YouTube, Vudu, Apple, Amazon and others. Check out THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER and share your favorite Sean Connery movies with us in the comments. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099810/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 See more
