Meet Miss Lady! She is looking for her #fureverhome. Please share! Lady is a sweet 2-year-old German Shepherd who came to the Shelter when her family moved out of the area. Lady has made lots of friends here at the Shelter and she is known to lean in and will even try to sit in your lap! Lady went into a home with a 2-year-old child and she was not comfortable with the activity and noise made by the child, so a home with children 10 and over would be best. Lady went to Sante... Adarius @rusticales with some volunteers and did exceptionally well in the outdoor environment. They reported she rode well in the car. Lady has a quiet demeanor about her, slightly reserved. She was curious when walking around the brewery inside and out. She was friendly when meeting people without being pushy - a true Lady! She enjoyed receiving attention and would give kisses and affection. She walks well on leash and is one smart girl as she would take direction well. She spent a good hour or so lying on a dog bed with a chew toy next to the table. Lady is looking for a family who can provide her some structure and work with her using positive reinforcement training. Lady needs to build her confidence and we know the perfect family is out there ready to give her a wonderful home! Adoptions are first come, first served! Please view available animals on our website at www.scanimalshelter.org (link in Bio) and then visit the Shelter at 1001 Rodriguez Street in Santa Cruz to turn in your application. All adoptions require proof of home ownership or landlord approval. Please have this email information prepared. If an animal is in Foster Care, please bring in your adoption application and schedule an appointment to meet the animal. Please call 831-454-7200. We are open seven days a week from 10 am to 6 pm. Thank you for your support! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter is an open admissionor open dooranimal shelter. This means that we will not turn away any animal that comes to our doors.

Meet our Pet of the Week - Boo!! BOO! ...no really, that’s my name! I am a 7-year-old black and white domestic shorthair male kitty. I came to the shelter with my pal Diego back in May. He recently got adopted and I couldn’t be happier for him! Diego and I both lived with other cats in our previous home, and we got along great! We love to cuddle just as much as we love to play, and become total pur machines for good scratches. Now that Diego is set up with his new family, it'...s time for me to find my furever home! I am just as fun solo as I was in a pair, and I will be your purrrrfect cuddly companion! So come down to the shelter and make me YOUR boo. You can call the shelter at (831) 454-7200 to set up an appointment. Adoptions are first come first serve in person at 1001 Rodriguez Street in Santa Cruz. For more information about Boo or any other adoptable animals, visit our website scanimalshelter.org We are running an adoption special for cats and kittens now thru August 31st - The $25 adoption fee includes spay/neuter, microchip (including registration), age-appropriate vaccinations, routine treatment for fleas/worms, and a free pet wellness exam with a local participating veterinarian. In addition, all cats adopted during this time will go home in a new Sherpa pet carrier!

Earlier today our Animal Control Dispatcher was contacted by Main Street Elementary School in Soquel regarding a coyote that was acting abnormally. Officer Todd Stosuy responded and found a coyote standing in the middle of the school's soccer fields. The coyote was "walking in circles" and foaming at the mouth. The coyote was sluggish and would allow the officer to get within 3 to 4 feet of him before stumbling away. Officer Stosuy requested additional resources to assis...t in capturing the coyote. Officer Carlos Montes and Duane from Wildlife Emergency Services responded to assist. The three responders were able to safely follow the coyote to a corner of the schoolgrounds where Officer Montes safely snared the coyote and Duane netted him to calm him down. Officer Stosuy humanely euthanized the animal. It is thought that this animal was either suffering from distemper, had ingested rat poison or was infected with rabies. We will be sending the animal to rabies testing to ensure there is no human safety risk, as there are reportedly 5-6 other coyotes living near the school. This is a reminder to ensure your animals are up to date on rabies and distemper vaccinations. We offer this service and information can be found here: https://www.scanimalshelter.org/vaccines-microchips/ This is ALSO a reminder to not use rat poison. Contact Wildlife Emergency Services for tips and tricks on dealing with rat infestations that don't involve poison.

Magpie is a lovely little pittie girl who is ready to find her new family. Magpie can take a little time to warm up to new people but once she does, she loves you! Wait till you see Magpie's zoomies, she takes off sprinting around the yard with a big smile on her face. Magpie enjoyed playing with a young neutered male dog and they jumped around and played well together. She has typical pitty play style, very full body and she loves to jump all over her dog friends. When playing with adoptable dog, Superman, he was very tolerant of her play style. Magpie may do well in a home with another dog, given they meet at the Shelter first and enjoy playing together. Adoptions are first come first served so visit the Santa Cruz Shelter from noon to 4pm.

Officer Carlos Montes started his day out anything but routine this morning. He was called for three loose cows on Highway 1 near the Mar Monte exit. The calves were running back on forth across the center median to both southbound and northbound lanes. California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Caltrans shut down both lanes of the Highway while Officer Montes safely secured the calves. Officer Montes said he couldn't have done it without the assistance of CHP and Caltrans who created a "human fence" to surround the calves so that he could catch them. The owner of the calves was located and cited for allowing his livestock to run loose.

We have a really soulful senior cat as the Pet of the Week this week! His name is Mickey! Mickey came to the Shelter as an owner surrender at the end of October. He had lived with another cat for 10 years but was suddenly not getting along with the other kitty. To keep both kitties safe and as stress free as possible, his former family decided it was best to find Mickey a new home. When Mickey first came to the Shelter, he was very nervous. He tended to hang out in a comfy hi...de spot where he could observe the world from a safe space. He slowly warmed up to staff and volunteers over time. After getting a dental (a fairly typical need for a senior cat) and moving into his very own room at the Shelter, Mickey came out of his shell. Although he still enjoys hanging out in his cozy beds, he is much more apt to greet visitors in his room. As soon as someone enters the room, Mickey now comes over purring away and rubbing against people's legs. Mickey LOVES kneading his adorable little paws on plush bedding. If there was a cat version of Great British Bake off, Mickey would certainly win! Mickey is looking to live out his golden years in an adoptive home. He would do best in a zen home as the only pet. He is currently our longest stay animal in the Shelter. If you are looking for a low key soulful guy to lounge around the house with, come meet Mickey. We are open 7 days a week from 10am to 6pm. For more information on Mickey or any other adoptable animals, visit scanimalshelter.org

Mary Ann is a sweet, sensitive girl who is looking for a home to blossom in. Originally, Mary Ann was found as a stray in Salinas in an agricultural field with her puppies. Once her legal stray hold was finished, she was transferred into our care from a partnering Shelter. Mary Ann has been hanging out in a foster home for about two weeks and has made a lot of progress in her confidence and socialization. She is living with an adolescent female dog about the same size as her ...and two adult males. Her foster dad says that Mary Ann is going to be a great dog to enrich someone's life. She is a shadow to the resident dog in the home - sleeping with her, wrestling, etc. It is required that Mary Ann go to a home with another similarly sized or large dog that is confident and likes to play. Mary Ann is described as a gentle soul. She loves hanging out on the couch and becomes more and more snuggly every day. She is highly food motivated and is learning sit thanks to cheese! Training her with high-value treats and positive reinforcement will help her learn and grow in confidence. A home without kids would be best. Mary Ann does seem to have an interest in chasing cats when she is out on walks but may be able to coexist with a cat in a home through a careful and slow introduction. Adoptions are first come, first served! Please view available animals on our website at www.scanimalshelter.org and then visit the Shelter at 1001 Rodriguez St. in Santa Cruz to turn in your application. All adoptions require proof of home ownership or landlord approval. Please have this information prepared. If an animal is in Foster Care, please bring in your adoption application and schedule an appointment to meet the animal. Please call 831-454-7200. We are open seven days a week from 10 am to 6 pm.

You need Bruno in your life! This handsome boy is an 1-year-old German Shepherd mix Thanks to volunteers Lexie and Regina for the awesome photos! Bruno came to the Shelter after his previous owner passed away. He had lived successfully with a female dog about the same size as him in his previous home. Bruno has enjoyed hanging out with staff and volunteers during his time at the Shelter but ultimately, would love to hang out in his forever home. Bruno's adopter should be... proactive about mentally and physically stimulating him. Bruno has demonstrated that he is very agile. He would be a great dog to do agility and dog sports with. His agile nature can also make it very easy for him to jump a fence that is shorter than 6 feet. Bruno should not be outdoors unattended to ensure that he is safely secured at home, especially in the transition. Bruno met a very energetic, enthusaistic intact male Malinois at the Shelter. He was very tolerant of the other dog's enthusiastic interaction and corrected him appropriately when he had had enough. A home with another dog may be a fit for Bruno provided they meet at the Shelter and get along. Kids may be appropriate for Bruno. He should not got to a home home with small animals, cats, or livestock, as he has shown prey drive. Bruno is a fun dog who is looking to be someone's sidekick. If you are an active person looking for a companion - Bruno is your guy! Adoptions are first come, first served! Please view available animals on our website at www.scanimalshelter.org (link in bio) and then visit the Shelter at 1001 Rodriguez St. in Santa Cruz to turn in your application. All adoptions require proof of home ownership or landlord approval. Please have this information prepared. We have very exciting news to share! Subie and Roo are home with their forever families; both were adopted Sunday and Monday. Congratulations! We wish them the best as they begin their new lives together. This brother and sister duo found as strays were brought to the Shelter for safe keeping.
