The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 02.07.2021

This morning we had the privilege of hosting leaders of the NAACP and the United Negro College (UNCF) Fund at Church headquarters in Salt Lake City. We welcome... these opportunities to build friendship and discuss shared initiatives that will continue to foster understanding and mutual respect. Such friendships enrich our lives and reflect important teachings of the Savior. He called on Peter and Andrew to abandon their nets and follow Him. He called upon the rich young ruler to abandon his wealth. He told the woman taken in adultery to abandon her sins and follow Him. In that same spirit, I reiterate my call to members of the Church everywhere to abandon attitudes and actions of prejudice and to promote respect for all of God’s children. This is a hallmark of all true followers of Jesus Christ. Abandoning prejudice must go well beyond what we say at the pulpit. We also need to abandon hurtful and insensitive comments in our conversations, in our private messages to one another and on social media, and, most importantly, in our own hearts. This will happen as we fully embrace the teachings of the Savior Jesus Christ, who said, Love one another; as I have loved you (John 13:34). May we strive to follow Him by living up to His lofty, loving, and inclusive example. Read more here: https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org//first-presidency

Today at Brigham Young University I shared a message about important issues of our day, including overcoming racism. Personal attitudes and official practices o...f racism are not consistent with the revealed word of God. We know that God created all mortals, and we are all children of God. The challenge of racism is not a new one, but recent events have precipitated the current discussion. The shocking police-produced death of George Floyd in Minnesota last May was surely a trigger for nationwide protests in the United States, whose momentum was carried forward under the message of Black Lives Matter. Of course Black lives matter! That is an eternal truth all reasonable people should support. Dear friends, let us all heed President Russell M. Nelson’s call to repent, to change, and to improve. Only the gospel of Jesus Christ can unite and bring peace to people of all races and nationalities. We who believe in that gospelwhatever our originsmust unite in love of each other and of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For years my eye doctor invited me to have a lens replacement surgery done to increase the quality of my vision. As a military and professional pilot, I had exc...ellent vision throughout my life. To have surgery performed on my eyes scared me quite a bit. Talking with friends who went through the same experience helped me a lot to gain courage and confidence. It was the right step to take and would influence my vision for the rest of my life. Since we are living in the year 2020, what time would be better to regain 20/20 vision? The doctor did one eye first and asked me to compare the vision with the uncorrected eye. When I did, I realized that through my uncorrected eye everything appeared darker, as through a brown filter. Through the restored eye, I could see more clearly, brightly, and in its true color. With the help of the doctor, something was taken off my eyes that had slowly developed over many years and had limited my vision without me really noticing it. I am still amazed and grateful as I now enjoy my regained ability to see things as they really are. Thanks to all who helped me to take that important step. I believe that such a step also occurs when we first learn about the gospel of Jesus Christ, or when we decide to recalibrate our life the Lord’s way. The path of repentance and forgiveness may at times seem a bit scary and hard to do. The Savior is the Master Healer. His divine sacrifice and love for us are the path to regain the clear and true vision of things as they really are. By the power and gift of the Holy Ghost, obstructions are taken away, and we will see with clarity how to decide and move forward in our lives. It is only after our vision is cleared that we realize what we had missed before. Let us pray for each other, help each other, and walk the Lord’s path together. I send my love and invite each of us to let Him open our eyes so we may see things as they really are. #HearHim

In a virtual session of the G20 Interfaith Forum, I have the opportunity to highlight the important role of religion during the COVID-19 crisis. I invite you to watch the live address and consider ways in which we can respond to COVID-19 that protect both physical and spiritual health.
