Register for this virtual presentation and workshop here: https://bit.ly/SDHCStoryPaint Chicano Park in San Diego’s Barrio Logan neighborhood marks its 51st anniversary this year. Join author Bea Zamora for a reading of her bilingual children’s book is recounting the park’s founding history from the first takeover of the land in the 1970s to the creation of the park. The program includes a workshop with artist and illustrator Maira Meza who will guide participants in a step-by-step process to create their own Chicano Park inspired art work. The Spirit of Chicano Park, available for sale through the author’s website, traces the community’s struggle to build the park through the eyes of two young children who move into the neighborhood. Profits from the sale of the book go to the Chicano Park Steering Committee and the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center. A materials kit for the May 5th workshop is available for $23 from the artist Maira Meza (must be purchased at least one week in advance). Participants may also use their own supplies. About the author: I have loved Chicano Park since the first time I stepped foot on this sacred land in 1979. After I learned about the struggle of the community to build a park, I knew that I would always be connected. Through my passion as an Azteca-Chichimeca danzante, I dance at the park and ask creator to bless each and every one of you. The community of Logan Heights is an inspiration for alla vibrant example of resilience and self-determination. ¡Que viva Chicano Park! -Beatrice Zamora-Aguilar About the illustrator: It's an honor and privilege to be able to do what I love for such an important part of our culture and community. I encourage everyone to stay connected to your roots, find your passion and never give up on what you believe in. Walk around the park and let the beautiful murals tell you the history of its struggles, victories and protectors. Let it remind you of the warrior you are meant to be...¡Sí Se Puede! -Maira Meza

This #IndigenousPeoplesDay2020, The San Diego History Center acknowledges that modern San Diego County is built upon the unceded native homelands of the Kumeyaay, Luiseño, Cahuilla, Cupeño and Juaneño. We acknowledge and thank these Indigenous communities and activists who partner with us to ensure their histories and culture continue to thrive. Pictured here are Kumeyaay veterans at the raising of the Kumeyaay Nation flag at the Serra Museum in Presidio Park, July 16, 2019.
