This sweet older mare (20-25) STILL has no companion home! We had one but it fell through due to adopters illness. She gets around just fine but has a hind leg muscle contraction every now and then so can't be ridden. Dr. Robert Steere from Artaurus Vet examined her, gave report on the injury, performed a dental and gave all her shots. She is ready to be a lovely buddy to a lonely pony, horse or person! Very easy to handle. And cute. Arab cross; 14.1 hands. Located in Petaluma CA Call SAFER at 707-824-9543

A wonderful horsewoman has left the barn. Gale Muellenhoff passed last week after a 6 month battle with cancer. She lived in Sonoma for quite a while before moving back to Maine in 2015. She often frequented Ukiah venues as well. All her life she was a strong and unrelenting advocate for horses. Helping with SAFER and esp. involved in advocacy for the wild horses. In spite of her wandering Gale always made sure her own retired horses had the life they needed: living in one lovely place for the duration of their very long lives. Her friends will miss her intensity and humor. If you knew Gale feel free to add your stories. RIP old friend. I'm sure you left this planet to the sound of pounding hooves coming to greet you!

A nice note from a fellow who just used our Safe Transitions program: "Tim Little At the end of the month I’m moving in with my daughter and two grandsons. I will keep my house for now and come up from time to time to work on it and do some garage sales. What’s been keeping me up for weeks is what about my 5 horses. Since Vicki past they pretty much been pets and weed eaters . I was worried about rehoming them because of there lack of training. Not no more, my oldest is goi...ng to retire on a 35 acre ranch in Arizona he will be a companion horse for another horse that was rescued. The Lady picking her up is the mother of the lady we bought her from. The other four (two already went). Are going to a ranch in Bodega bay and be retrained to give rides on the beach. Tonight I will sleep and thank God over and over. Can’t thank enough the help I got from S.A.F.E.R. horse rescue, they got it done! See more

Update: We have adopted out all the horses at this time to very secure homes. Thank you all for your interest. There was a lot of calls and texts and I apologize if I did not get to yours. Then there is Honey - 23 and 14.3 hands. She was ridden a lot but not for a while now. She likes to play with pasture balls or a soccer ball will do. She has had kids on her on a lead line too, but she can startle sometimes. - not that she has done that with the kids... Just not for amateur riders. Loads well. 707-824-9543

** What Trump Has Done For Animals & the Environment in the Last 4 Years ** 1. Ended a 100 year-old wild bird protection law. 2. Expanded hunting on more land p...reviously deemed reserved for wildlife protection. 3. Took away protections for coastal marine animals. 4. Signed a resolution to allow the dumping of coal and mining waste into waterways. 5. Awarded dozens of lion trophy hunting permits to GOP donors. 6. Rolled back protections for the Endangered Species List (so that "economic factors" can now *trump* putting a species on the endangered list for example). 7. Reversed a law so hunters can kill sleeping bears and their cubs in their dens. 8. Reversed a law so hunters can kill wolves and their pups. 9. Reversed a law so hunters can chase animals down and shoot them from helicopters. 10. Reversed the Obama ban on hunters bringing elephant *trophy* parts into the U.S.A. 11. Put the bee-killing pesticide "Sulfoxaflor" back on the market again. 12. Chose Brian Klippenstein as the senior advisor to the USDA. This man was in charge of an anti-animal lobbying group called "Protect the Harvest." This group advocates for horse slaughter, puppy mills, factory farming, and Ag-gag laws. 13. Chose Terry Branstad to be the ambassador to China. Branstad is a major supporter of factory farmed pigs and is working to assure *more* pigs for the Chinese market. 14. In 2018, Trump's USDA rolled back regulations for an Obama-era animal welfare rule, which provided better treatment of farmed animals whose products are labeled "organic." The rule allowed birds to move freely, stretch their wings, stand normally, and engage in natural behaviors. 15. Consistently denies Climate Change and pulled the U.S. out of the Paris Accords. Climate Change threatens to kill off whole species of plants and animals (and has already killed off many animals). 16. Reversed the ban on lead bullets, which kill not only hunted animals, but also any animals who happen to eat their remains. 17. Reversed the ban on using bait (and dogs) to hunt bears. 18. Two weeks into the Trump Administration, thousands of documents detailing animal welfare violations (mistreatment, neglect, etc), were removed from the website of the Department of Agriculture (USDA), which had been posting them publicly for decades. These are inspection records and annual reports for every commercial animal facility in the U.S., including zoos, breeders, factory farms, and laboratories (they were eventually restored however after strong condemnation). 19. Not something he necessarily did himself, but it should be noted that Safari Club International (a big game hunting organization), is a regular Trump supporter and financial donor. In other words, he accepts money from them with no qualms or hesitation. 20. Ringling Brothers is phasing out their elephants. Because of this, Trump declared: "I, for one, will never go again" out of disappointment. 21. Increased the line speed in chicken slaughterhouses (allowing for MORE abuse and cruelty, due to rushed conditions, which lead to rougher handling, less time and attention given to individual animals, and inificiant kills). 22. Increased the line speed in pig slaughterhouses (allowing for more neglect and botched kill attempts, that will lead to even GREATER suffering and abuse to the animals before they die). 23. Slaughterhouse workers have been given inspection duties that were previously undertaken by professional inspectors (which means less oversight and more leeway for abuse, cruelty and neglect). 24. Has intentionally blocked new proposed regulations for these factory farms. 25. $16 billion of the stimulus money (intended to combat the coronavirus), was given to big beef producers like Cargill, Tyson, JBS, and National Beef, which control 80% of the cows bred and slaughtered in the U.S. (original post by Brandon Kirkwood)*

As our followers all know - SAFER has used the foster model for horse rescue for over a decade. With Covid here, we can't ask folks to allow the public in to adopt - so we are out of that part for now. (Also the horse auctions have shut down out in the valley!) But here is a great way to still foster animals while in quarantine and help save their lives! And for the same reasons: Displaced critters are needing a place to SIMPLY BE while their families regroup from the fires. Please give it a thought and contact the folks at CART to see how your place could make a huge difference for animals and their grateful owners! SHARE this please as the fires have taken out a huge chunk of Sonoma, Mendocino and Napa. We may need the help of others outside of our immediate area. THANKS for being an Animal advocate!

Wonderful solution found! Our favorite NEW Sanctuary Heart Of Gold has taken them!! They have done wonders with a very abused PMU mare we rescued from auction!! Help us solve this one! A young (24) woman, caring for her dying Mom ... Mom passes and leaves no money for the families 4 horses. The landlord demands the horses leave right away. They are now in a very temporary place. The woman is working 2 to 3 jobs just trying to make life work in a pandemic wrought with wil...dfire. A VERY hard worker. Needs to board them somewhere closer - Guernville, Forestville, Graton, Sebastopol etc. She can do some self care, provide own hay. All four can be together - have been for a very long time. Two little ones and 2 regular size. $$$ is a real issue - can someone rent a pasture or large paddock to her? Can we share together and find a spot for these guys to get through the winter ahead? If you have any ideas call Troy at 971-225-2887 See more

News of the North Bay shared a post. 36m URGENT: Sonoma County has issued a wildfire evacuation warning for areas near a rapidly-growing fire north of Cazadero and south of Lake Sonoma. The 13-4 fire was sparked by lightning on Monday and has grown to over 100 acres near Mohrhardt Ridge.... Although winds in the area are currently light, firefighters on the scene say the fire has potential for growth to the south. Residents in areas north of the Austin Creek recreational area, east of The Cedars, west of Mill Creek Road and south of Stewarts point-Skaggs Springs Road are being advised to prepare to evacuate if needed due to the growth of the fire.

Truth. Not one of them deserves this. So we say. But we go on to do the things that make that non-performer a money maker for the meat man. We get a charge out of horse racing. We support the registries that make their dime encouraging as much breeding as possible with their "shows." We drop the useless ones off at auctions. We find "good homes" that we drop them at and never look back. And we demonize the folks that euthanize their "useless" horse rather than take this chance. But mostly we lie to ourselves. It's not a small lie. We treat this special animal the same way we treat the planet we walk upon: for profit, for convenience, for ego satisfactions. And now our numbers up ....will we evolve in time?
