Daughter of sharecropper. Mother and another child in background. Wilmington, North Carolina. 1935 Photograph by Arthur Rothstein Sharecropperstenant farmers ...who paid rent with a share of the harvestfaced a perfect storm of disaster and displacement during the Great Depression. Crashing farm prices and mechanization reduced the need for farm labor; then years of drought, dust storms and floods destroyed cropland in many regions of the county. Tenant farmers and sharecroppers who had worked the landoften for generationswere suddenly forced to move. The malnourished, ill-clad, and homeless sharecropper families lost access to schools, healthcare and established support networks. With unemployment rates near 25 percent there were few job opportunities for the dispossessed, and many slipped into abject poverty. Government price-supports paid farmers to cut production, adding pressure to evict sharecroppers, but few landowners split the subsidy with their tenants as required by the program. When Arthur Rothstein took this photo in 1935, President Roosevelt was pressuring Congress to create additional New Deal programs that would provide direct assistance to struggling sharecroppers. #arthurrothstein #arthurrothsteinlegacyproject

"In 1960, while a construction crew dismantled a row of brownstones right across from my own brownstone studio on East 58th Street, I was inspired to, somehow i...mmortalize those buildings. I had the vision of 43 women in formal dress adorning the windows of the skeletal facade. We had to work quickly to secure City permissions, arrange for models which included celebrities, the demolition supervisior’s wife (third floor, third from left), my own wife (second floor, far right), and also secure the Rolls Royce to be parked on the sidewalk. Careful planning was a necessity as the photography had to be accomplished during the workers’ lunch time! The day before the buildings were razed, the 43 women appeared in their finest attire, went into the buildings, climbed the old stairs, and took their places in the windows. I was set up on my fire escape across the streeet, directing the scene, with bullhorn in hand. Of course I was concerned for the Models’ safety, as some were daring enough to pose out on the crumbling sills. The photography came off as planned. What had seemed to some as too dangerous or difficult to accomplish, became my fantasy fulfilled, and my most memorable self - assigned photograph. It has been an international award winner ever since. Most professional photographers dream of having one signature picture they are known for. Girls in The Windows is mine." Girls in The Windows. Ormond Gigli, 1960.

Today, we received direction from the Regional Office that the Emergency Forest Closures would be extended for the seven of the nine forests that are currently closed. This includes the Inyo National Forest. The regional order is expected to be extended through October 8. Emergency Fire Restrictions will also be extended. As always, the regional order can be rescinded or extended, based on conditions. The Regional Office decision is based on the continued hot and dry conditions that remain in the forecast for the upcoming week, continued active fires throughout the state, and continued firefighting resources limitations.

Clyde is featured on the cover of this month's issue of Medium Format Magazine! During their interview, MediumFormat.com asked Clyde, "You vividly remember your... "first walk to the swamp" led by your friend Oscar Thompson. Did this event lead you to concentrate on black and white exclusively? Clyde: "Oscar did not inspire me to turn to black and white. What Oscar did was to educate me about the mysteries and beauty of the swamp. Ted's [Clyde's son] death is what made me decide to go black and white."
