The Future of Root Farm Summer Camp Hello Camp Families Wow, what a year am I right?!? So much change and uncertainty, navigating a pandemic and all that came with it distance learning, zoom meetings missing friends and loved ones I feel blessed to have good health, a wonderful community, and Root Farm to call home.... For the last year I have been trying to see what the the future holds for our little farm experiment. My camp programs have provided countless days of summer fun for so many young ones, not to mention myself, Montana and Ali too!! As the years press on and my daughter heads into her senior year of high school this fall, we as a family have made the really tough decision to bring our Farm Camp program at Root Farm to an end. We know this is going to be sad for lots of young campers who look forward to spending summers on the farm with us but we hope they are left with enough amazing memories to last a lifetime. I will be finalizing the books in the coming weeks and if you have a credit with us I will be sending out refunds by June 1st. If you have any questions please reach out, I’m still here teaching riding lessons and helping others to fulfill their horsemanship dreams. Thank you for all of your support and sharing the love of Root Farm with your friends for now we say farewell and thanks for the memories. We never know what the future holds, but I’m planning on some horsey fun time for anyone who’s interested... horse camps in 2022?? maybe In the mean time... happy trails y’all and if I don’t see ya in the future I’ll see ya in the pasture.

"A lot of people from my community have never seen a horse in real life, let alone be on top of the horse," said Adam Hollingsworth, a Woodlawn native who rides... as Dreadheadcowboy. Taking care of another animal can be therapeutic, he said. He credits his horses for helping to improve his own mental health. I’m riding with a purpose now, Hollingsworth said. I was down, depressed, at rock bottom in November, December and January. When I started going out to ride my horse, it uplifted me. He now lives in Crete, but grew up a bad little kid at 62nd Street and Kimbark Avenue in Woodlawn. Until four years ago, the only horses he’d ever seen were at the Bud Billiken Parade or police horses. He’s started a GoFundMe (link below) with the goal of teaching Chicago kids how to ride, groom and care for a horse. If his $50,000 goal is met, he’ll take his riding workshops across the Midwest. Dearest Farm Families, We tried and tried to figure out a way to move forward with camps, while adhering to state guidelines and restrictions... so in order to keep, us all safe and healthy we decided it was in everyone’s best interest to cancel camp this summer. If you are signed up please check your email for more information. We will miss you all terribly and look forward to seeing you in 2021!

hello root farm friends! i hope you are all staying healthy and making it through sheltering in place with peace and kindness (i know it can be challenging ) today the most magical of things happened on the farm... a swarm of honey bees chose our hive as their home!!! (the previous occupants left last fall when yellow jackets attacked ) ... hooray we have bees on the farm again be well my friends... i know we’ll see each other again someday!!
