Plant of the Week is SUMAC (H:25' W:25') This shrub forms antler-like branches that can be smooth or hairy. The fuzzier varieties tend to deter deer due to the texture of branches, leaves, and fruit. As the sumac shifts from its pale summer colors, this beautiful slender-leafed shrub slowly turns orange to deep red through the final months of our season. The fruit from the shrub is widely used spice in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cooking. A great smokey flavored herb to add to the grill or fancy afternoon drinks on the deck.
