Complex abdominal hernias are a special class of hernia that are often associated with higher complications and recurrence rates, and are therefore more difficult to manage. These hernias are often large, are recurrent, and are surrounded by tissue that is weakened or stretched. We have unique, minimally invasive surgical expertise in managing and repairing complex abdominal wall hernias, which diminish complications, pain, infection, and recurrence rates. Where before repai...ring these hernias meant creating a long abdominal incision to enter the abdomen, we utilize minimally invasive robotic techniques which allows us to repair these hernias through a few small (1cm) incisions. In many cases, patients are able to be discharged the same day. Only in the most complex cases is there a need for an overnight hospital stay. (Photos obtained from Acta Cirurgica Brasileira)

A bit of interesting surgical history. Did you know that... 6,500 B.C.E. - Skulls found in France show signs of a rudimentary surgery called trepanation, which involved drilling a hole in the skull. 1540 - English barbers and surgeons unite to form The United Barber-Surgeons Company. These barber-surgeons performed tooth extractions and bloodletting.... 1843 - First use of ether as an anesthetic. 1855 - Mary Edwards Walker graduates from medical school and becomes the first female surgeon in America. 1867 - British surgeon Joseph Lister publishes Antiseptic Principle in the Practice of Surgery, highlighting the importance of cleanliness in surgery. The mortality rate for surgical patients immediately falls. 1885 - First successful appendectomy performed, in Iowa. 1896 - First successful heart surgery performed, in Germany. 1899 - Aspirin is introduced into medical practice. This is the first, non addictive safe and effective medicine. 1928 - Antibiotics discovered. 1975 - First organ surgery performed using the laparoscopic technique. 1985 - First documented robotic surgery. 2000 - da Vinci robotic surgical system wins U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval. The system is now used in a wide variety of robotic surgical procedures.

A volvulus occurs when a loop of intestine twists around itself, resulting in a bowel obstruction. Symptoms include abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, vomiting, constipation, and at times bloody stool. Often, it requires prompt surgical intervention to avoid irreversible damage to the bowel. In this case the bowel was already affected and had to be removed in order to save the patient's life. The patient recovered and went on enjoy life with his loved ones.
