2020 December Crime Maps The department has posted the December 2020 crime maps. The maps can be individually seen by viewing the web link on the department website or clicking on the link below. The department has seen a decrease of 16% in Part 1 Crimes committed year-to-date through December 2020 (321) compared to year-to-date 2019 (382), having a total of 61 less Part 1 crimes reported. The greatest decrease of reported totals were in Larceny (-59) and Simple Assaults (-9).... Arrest Blotter (December 21 December 27) On Tuesday, at 1:11 AM, Officer Veltkamp made a traffic stop on a vehicle at Second St. and Walnut Ave. Contact was made with the driver, identified as Mohammed Afzal (28 years of Modesto), and passenger, identified as Corey Prahser (29 years of Modesto). Sgt. Donald Luthey Retires after 26-year Career Sgt. Don Luthey served his last day with the Ripon Police Department yesterday as his retirement from law enforcement becomes effective today. Sgt. Luthey began his law enforcement career with the Ripon Police Department in October of 1994, after graduating from the Modesto Regional Criminal Justice Training Center. Sgt. Luthey has held several sworn-officer job designation with the department over his 26 years of service to th...e Ripon community. With his greatest impacts being in Patrol Supervisor, Policy and Training Administrator, and Hazardous Materials Expert. We take a moment today to thank him for his contributions to our department, the impact he has had on our community, and his influences in the growth and development of our young staff. Thank you for your loyalty and service Sgt. Luthey. We hope you enjoy your retirement!

Future K-9 Handler On September 9, Officer Kyle Prather was selected as our next K-9 handler. Kyle began his law enforcement career with the Ripon Police Department in 2017. His other assignments include Patrol Officer and Motor Officer. He will officially be assigned to the position once we receive our Apprehension and Detection K-9 named Gandalf in December, and they both complete an intense 8-week K-9 handler course in compliance with Peace Officer Standards and Training requirements. The department will then have two canines assigned to patrol.

Saturation Traffic Enforcement Program - Ripon Operation The Ripon Police Department, in conjunction with and with the assistance of the Tracy Police Department, Manteca Police Department, and Lathrop Police Services conducted a joint operation known as a STEP (Saturation Traffic Enforcement Program) in the City of Ripon yesterday led by Sgt. Stephen Meece. Operations move from city to city monthly. The goal of the operation is to decrease traffic collisions through proacti...ve enforcement efforts focused on hazardous moving violations. These violations include, but are not limited to red light, speed, stop sign, and distracted driving violations. Officers were deployed to areas identified as problematic through statistical data as well as citizen complaints. During the eight hour operation, 101 citations were issued for various hazardous vehicle code violations. Of those citations, 16 were for cell phone, 12 stop sign, six seat belt, and 42 for excessive speed. The remainder were for other hazardous moving violations. In addition, two people were cited for driving with suspended driver’s licenses and two for driving without a license issued. The Ripon Police Department is committed to reducing the number of traffic collision, related injuries, and facilitating the safe and expedient flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic resulting in safer roadways.

Officer Gursharan Kang Joins Investigations Division On November 9, Officer Gursharan Kang joined the Investigations Division as our General Crimes Detective. He began his law enforcement career in 2010 as a Reserve Officer with the Livingston Police Department. He spent a year and a half as a full time Police Officer for the City of Gustine before joining the Ripon Police Department in 2019. We look forward to seeing Officer Kang develop his investigative skills and serve our great community.

Field Training Officer Promotion On October 7, Officer Scott King was selected as the department’s newest Field Training Officer. He will officially be appointed to the position on December 18 after completing a 40-hour course of training mandated by the State of California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. A Field Training Officer (FTO) is a member of our organization who is responsible for the training and evaluation of newly hired officers. The Ripon ...Police Department also uses the FTO position as an Officer in Charge for patrol shift supervision when a Sergeant is not on duty. Officer King has been with our department since 2003. We believe our newly hired officers will benefit greatly from Scott’s many years of experience.

Department and Community Set to Bring Awareness to Breast Cancer In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease, our local community members, area businesses, and Ripon Police Department are teaming up to bring awareness and raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Uniformed department staff will don a special patch for the month of October to highlight the importance of breast cancer awareness, education and rese...arch. The patches were able to be purchased through donations made by Mike and Mona Restuccia, Bank of Stockton, Dr. Debbie Daniels of Ripon Veterinary Hospital, Ray and Marla Livengood, and San Joaquin Regional Transit District. The Ripon Police Department will be selling these Breast Cancer Awareness patches for $10 each. All proceeds from the sales will be going to help support awareness, education and research through the American Cancer Society. Patches will be on sale in the department lobby between the hours of 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Department Swears in New Officer Today, Jonathan Rodrigues was sworn in with the Ripon Police Department as our newest officer. He will immediately begin our 16 week field training program during where he will be trained on all aspects of law enforcement with an emphasis on department policies, philosophies, and core values. Please welcome Officer Rodrigues to our department family. He will strive to provide the highest quality of police services to this great community. With the hiring of Jonathan, the department is left with one Police Officer vacancy.
