Contact tracing should have been a central feature of our response from the beginning.

I have had the pleasure of being a colleague of Dr. David Seaman, DC, MA, an expert in the field of nutrition. He has written a series of books on the effects o...f low grade inflammation, a state he calls "flamed." Approximately 75-80% of chronic disease that we in the US experience, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, obesity and more, are due to lifestyle--the foods we eat, the exercise and sleep we do not get and the stress we cannot manage. These factors create this inflammatory state. We also know that those most likely to succumb to COVID-19 have co-morbidities like the ones I describe above. Here I review the first in a series of books written by Dr. Seaman. For those interested in understanding this process and who also wish to become "deflamed," check out my review. And read his book! It's all about the antibodies. Then there is clearance to work in relative safety. We need the antibody testing asap.

Some thoughts about what we are all in the middle of.

On taking care of ourselves during this difficult time. This is a really stressful time for us all. Many of us are working from home. Many of us not working at all. In a search for human connection, many are spending hours and hours online. To dull the anxiety that naturally arises, some of us will seek pain relief with alcohol, drugs, both legal and not, as well as other soothers like junk food and endless television shows. So I think it is especially important that we take ...care of ourselves, our minds and bodies, at this moment. Here are a few things we can all do easily: 1. Don't go more than 45 minutes on your computer, without taking a break. That could mean just standing up, walking around your home, getting a drink of water. Take 5 deep, conscious breaths and do some shoulder rolls and standing backbends to help relieve the mental and mechanical stress of being seated at the computer. We need to move! 2. Go out for a walk. I know that most of us are on lockdown but we are allowed to go for walks (as long as we keep a safe social distance) and to the grocery stores, doctors appointments and pharmacies (and cannabis dispensaries if you are in a "lucky state:)" So just go out and walk or combine your trip to any of these places with a nice, rigorous 20-30 minute walk. The fresh air and movement will serve all of us well. 3. Meditate. Even if you have never done so, it is easy and so valuable. Find a comfortable space. It could be a favorite chair or a cushion on the floor. And just sit. And breathe. Notice your breath, coming in and then going out. Thoughts will arise. Some of them may be quite anxious. Worries about work, your family, yourself. They will come and they will go as you keep coming back to your focus on your breath. Do not worry that your mind will wander. It is the nature of mind. If you like, set a timer for five minutes and if you find this exercise relaxing, providing peace of mind, try it the next day for 6 minutes; and so on. 4. Drink lots of water (that will keep you getting up more regularly) and try to eat healthy foods: fresh fruits and vegetables (organic when possible), healthy meats if you are an omnivore, and avoid processed, floury and sugary foods. 5. Express gratitude to those you love. Even when things are hard, there is always much to be grateful for; that we have a place to live and food to eat and friends who care for us. And send love (and money when possible) out to the many who are alone, living outside, who are struggling to survive day to day. They need our support in any way we can give it. It is so easy to get caught up in the anxiety of this moment. But even in the midst of it all, we also have a rare opportunity to just stop; to reflect; to connect with family and friends, even if it is done virtually. So please take care. And if anyone has any other thoughts about what is helping them at this moment, please share. We need each other now more than ever.
