National Weather Service (NWS) Reports Fire Weather Warning in East Bay Hills from Oct. 21 to Oct 23. NWS reports the following for the East Bay Hills: Fire Weather Watches (Oct 21 Evening to Oct 23 Morning):... Current thinking is that the period covered by this Fire Weather Watch will be slightly less windy and dry than previous events this season, however, a second and potentially third burst of gusty offshore winds is possible late in the weekend into early next week. This may bring a compounding drying effect to already extremely dry fuels. o Wednesday night (Oct 21) through Friday morning (Oct 23), stronger winds with a bigger reach to the East Bay Hills, Diablo Range, and eventually the Santa Cruz Mountains. o Saturday night (Oct 24) into early next week has the potential to be the strongest of the three and over a broader area, though confidence is much lower. For the latest forecast updates, visit www.weather.gov/BayArea WHAT TO DO: 1. No outdoor fires 2. Do not use equipment to cut or mow dry grass 3. PGE Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) Report for Oct. 19, 2020 The PG&E Emergency Operations Center was activated on 10/19 at 0800 in preparation for potential PSPS and reports the following: Interior areas will remain unseasonably warm through mid-next week with temperatures remaining in the upper 80s and 90s. ... Light northerly or offshore winds are expected through Monday across the northern interior before the winds increase Tuesday and into Wednesday. Wind gusts are currently expected to be mostly under 30 mph and primarily focused across the western Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra in addition to the highest terrain in SF North Bay. Some, but not all, forecast models suggest a potential Diablo wind event starting Wednesday night and continuing through Thursday. The winds in this type of event focus primarily across the Sacramento Valley, Northern Sierra, and elevated terrain of the North and East Bay. (Click on the attached visual for potential PSPS impact areas.) PG&E meteorology will continue to monitor the situation closely for any weather model forecast changes. Fire danger remains seasonably high as live fuel moisture values are at critical levels in the lower and middle elevations and dead fuel moisture values are at critical levels and historically low in some areas. The latest National Interagency Fire Center wildland fire potential outlook continues to favor above normal large wildland fire potential for most of Northern CA for October followed by normal large fire potential for November and December. BAY AREA AIR QUALITY MGMT. DIST.: AIR QUALITY ADVISORY through SUNDAY FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 16, 2020 CONTACT: Ralph Borrmann, 415.760.0285... Air quality advisory for wildfire smoke extended through Sunday Air quality forecast good to moderate but smoke impacts are possible SAN FRANCISCO The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is extending an air quality advisory through Sunday, October 18, due to possible wildfire smoke impacts. There is no Spare the Air Alert in effect and air quality is not expected to be unhealthy. Smoke from the August Complex and Creek Fires are expected to drift into the Bay Area, causing smoky and hazy skies through Sunday. Air quality is expected to be in the good to moderate range and is not expected to exceed the national 24-hour health standard on Friday. The Air District will be closely monitoring air quality throughout the region for smoke impacts from the fires. If smoke reaches unhealthy levels, it is important that Bay Area residents protect their health by avoiding exposure. If possible, stay inside with windows and doors closed until smoke levels subside, if temperatures allow. It is also recommended that those impacted by smoke set their air conditioning units and car vent systems to re-circulate to prevent outside air from moving inside. Smoke can irritate the eyes and airways, causing coughing, a dry scratchy throat and irritated sinuses. Elevated particulate matter in the air can trigger wheezing in those who suffer from asthma, emphysema or COPD. Elderly persons, children and individuals with respiratory illnesses are particularly susceptible to elevated air pollution levels and should take extra precautions to avoid exposure. Visit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s new Fire and Smoke Map for current air quality readings: https://bit.ly/2S3mDoI.
