Democracy -- Right Now! is a video action project collaboration between our department and USF's Speaking Center to support voting and political engagement in relation to the 2020 Election. If you're a faculty teaching a Rhetoric course, don't forget to tell your students about this great opportunity for them to express and amplify their voices remotely.
The Speaking and Writing Centers will be operating remotely for Fall 2020! Students can make appointments at the Writing Center starting on August 24th and at the Speaking Center on September 1st. Speaking Center Coaches will be available to offer support with a variety of aspects of public speaking and Writing Center Consultants can help on any part of the writing process. Go to https://myusf.usfca.edu/lwsc to learn more and to schedule a Zoom appointment.
Congratulations! Our Speaking Center Coach Ria Angelica Laxa is among the 2020 Student Leadership Award recipients! Ria was given the Pedro Arrupe Award for embodying the ideals of Ignatian spirituality and Jesuit education and showing commitment to promoting justice. She shares her thoughts on winning: "I feel blessed to have been awarded the Pedro Arrupe Award. It is a reminder to me that actions of kindness rooted in love, understanding, and service for others are how I can continue to uplift my neighbors whose voices and stories have been ignored for too long. Thank you USF for this honor and thank you to all those who have supported me along the way."
"Mmm....What happens if I press THIS button?" Hope everyone is doing well on week#4 of online instruction. Rhetoric Professor Leigh Meredith starts the week off strong!
"Happy Monday! Ready to rock and roll with week #3 of online learning and shelter in place? Professor Roberta D’Alois may have mastered Zoom teaching but has not yet mastered the art of selfies!"
The Rhetoric and Language Department Office will have open Zoom office hours on Mondays 2 to 3pm starting March 30 until April 27 (with possible extension depending on needs). If you have a question about your Rhetoric placement, need to get in touch with a faculty member or your undeclared arts advisor, or have any questions that you would normally come into our office for, drop in during office hours! Due to San Francisco's shelter in place order in response to COVID-19, our physical office will be closed but we are still here for support! The department's staff are available and the best method of contact is to email [email protected] for Rhetoric inquiries and [email protected] for the Academic English for Multilingual (AEM) Students Program.
Thank you all for coming out to our 6th Annual Adjunct Rhetoric Conference!
We had a great Rhetoric Week last week! A big thanks for those who joined us at our events!
Rhetoric Professor Gina Stahl-Haven is among the top 40 to perform in The World Series of Comedy in Las Vegas! Her performance is tonight in La Comedy Club. Let's wish her luck and hope she makes it to the top 6! Read more about her in USF's news & media article: https://www.usfca.edu/news/classroom-club
We had a great turnout at our International Student Panel yesterday. International graduate and undergraduate students discussed different academic cultures, adjustment to the United States, and their best practices for exceeding at USF! In the evening we had our Writing for a Real World 17th issue book launch. Congratulations to the authors for their hard work and for getting published! Issues are available at our department office in KA 202. Don't forget to check out the rest of our Rhetoric Week events: https://myusf.usfca.edu/art/rhetoric-language/rhetoric-week
