'Pierre Verger in Suriname,' Willem de Rooij's current exhibition at Portikus, contends with the legacy of colonialism through the work of the eponymous French photographer and ethnologist, who in 1948 produced a suite of 257 images during an eight-day trip to Suriname. A new, fully illustrated catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition presents these photographs, which are organized according to the thematic categories and arrangement Verger himself finalize...d in the early 1980s. Edited by the artist with Christina Lehnert and Philippe Pirotte, the book includes newly commissioned texts by Karin Amatmoekrim, Ayrson Heráclito, Philippe Pirotte, and Gloria Wekker. As a pillar of Los Angeles’s art community and one of its primary beacons to the world since 1970, Margo Leavin’s exemplary career indelibly marks not only the ongoing LA museum and gallery scene, but also the city’s now-cemented stature as an internationally vital node for contemporary art. Shaun Caley Regen sat down with Leavin to discuss the genesis and legacy of her influential art space for GalleryPlatform.LA.
