This afternoon I attended a memorial service for Mary Shaw. Mary was my counselor at Fullerton College many years ago. She was an extraordinary counselor; why...? Beyond doing educational plans, she cared, she listened, she spent the time she thought the student needed and her students were willing to wait their turn rather than see another counselor who was readily available. She was feisty and friendly; always advocating for students. She continued to learn and attend conferences to benefit her students. She was very involved in the community and beyond. In her class, she encouraged us by reminding us to like ourselves and to keep going to class, despite the obstacles we thought stood in our way. There were no excuses in Mary's mind. And every semester she inspired us by inviting past students to share their success stories with us in the faculty lounge, while also acknowledging those who were on track to graduate. I attended just to stay motivated, if only for a few minutes in between classes and to eat. She always had food - cold cuts, a salad and a full sheet cake to honor the graduates, which she insisted the administration find funding for, and they did. Mary changed lives; mine included. I remember starting with one class thinking I don't think I can do this school thing... So it was rather ironic that I retired last year; ended my career at Fullerton College as a counselor in the office next to the one where I was counseled by Mary when I was a student. I spoke to her by phone only a month ago, and every time I called to see how she was doing, she turned the table and wanted to know how I was doing. She always gave me the best advice she could offer. I loved her dearly. See more
