Our redwood parks are so much more than tall trees and elk! There are miles of ocean beaches at Redwood National and State Parks (NPS) and there are off-shore parks protecting sea life like the Giant Pacific Octopus. This orange cephalopod is the newest addition to our park stores and online shop. All purchases support the parks we serve. https://redwoodparksconservancy.org//new-item-12-pacific-o - - More about California's "Ocean Parks" MPAs:... The northern California marine protected areas (MPAs), from the California/Oregon border to Alder Creek (near Point Arena), are the northernmost component of a statewide MPA network. The 20 protected areas in this region cover approximately 137 square miles, or about 13 percent of northern California state waters. Six special closures are also managed as part of the region’s complement of MPAs, which protect offshore rocks that offer protection from human disturbance for roosting seabirds and haul out locations for marine mammals. Are you travelling in our favorite redwood parks this July and August? Please plan your driving with the closure on highway 101 in mind. The road will have daily closures south of Crescent City/north of Klamath. Starting July 6th, the highway will be OPEN before 8 a.m.; from Noon to 3 p.m. and after 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Fridays 101 is open before 8 am, and after Noon. Saturdays and Sundays there are 30 minute delays during the day. Crews are working to repair a massive slide above the roadway at a spot called "Last Chance Grade". With the extended closures, Caltrans District 1 hopes to speed up completion of the work to the end of August.

This is really solid advice from our partners at Redwood National and State Parks (NPS) about keeping a safe, respectful distance around the parks' largest residents, Roosevelt Elk. We're going to try the "thumb test" next time we have an elk sighting.

The New York Times visited some of our favorite places and asks some big questions. https://www.nytimes.com//california-redwoods-oldgrowth.htm

We couldn't inspire others to support our redwood parks, to visit and preserve these special places, without the talented photographers who donate their work for our outreach. Happy #NaturePhotographyDay to all our amateur and professional photographers! Thank you for your beautiful images. Photos: Jon Parmentier Patrick Mueller Photography Rob DiPerna John Chao

"Redwoods are like columns, beautiful in color and symmetry, and a redwood forest is a wonder-wood, full of resinous fragrance and with a thousand varied forms of leaf and branch." ~Eloise J. Roorbach, "The Big Basin," Overland Monthly, October 1907 Photo: Rob DiPerna

It is New Year's Eve. We're wondering (we bet you are too) about what 2021 will look like. Will it be a steep climb? Probably. But when we are out in the forest and we meet a narrow, uphill trail, we all clasp hands and help each other up until it gets easier. That's why we are hoping that you'll join us in working for our redwood parks by making a donation to support them.... The Redwood Resilience Matching Fund has $11,230 left to double your donation, whatever the amount. Thank you! With your help we can support our parks together. Coast Redwoods stand tall, some over 300 feet. But they don't do it alone! Redwoods' shallow roots knit together with their neighbors and it is that support that keeps them standing against storms and wind. We are the same. We need support from our friends to support our redwood parks. A group of our friends are MATCHING the first $25,000 in donations we receive before January 1st. Help us reach the challenge by giving here: https://www.redwoodparksconservancy.org/GIVE or use the Facebook Donation button below.
