"Operation Santa Paws goes virtual Haute Dogs’ beloved sleigh ride to the animal shelters is, like everything else, going virtual this holiday. Santa Paws (who bears a striking resemblance to both Justin Rudd and Peter Krause) is asking us animal lovers to collect itemstoys, food, treats, shelter cleaning suppliesand taking them in your own sleigh directly to the shelters and rescues. Don’t want to venture outdoors? No probmake your list and check it twice or more in the Links to loveables section at the end of The Scratching Post. Each of the shelters and rescues listed has a donation button, and many have wish lists for food, toys, supplies and other needs. Visit SantaPaws for more information www.JustinRudd.com/santapaws."

This North Dakota station ran a piece about Operation Santa Paws. Today, December 3rd is on the National Day Calendar. Groups and individuals all over the country (and Mexico) collect toys, treats and supplies for local rescues and shelters. Justin Rudd started the effort in Long Beach, California, in 2001. This year, because of COVID, we are not gathering to deliver collected items. Rather, we invite you to take your collected items straight to the rescue or shelter of your choice any time before Christmas. MORE (and to donate): JustinRudd.com/santapaws.

Hi Justin, can you please share & invite local Dog Lovers to our Dog PAWty on Sun Nov 1st... 1 to 4 pm... at Uptown Dog Park in Bixby Knolls... 4600 Long Beach ...Bl, (across from Johnny Rebs.) We usually had this every Summer in honor of "Leo's Birthday", but this year we've pushed it off and thought it would be fun to do now, as people might want to dress up their furry kids AND come to a Doggie PAWty, combined! ... Outdoors, byoc=chair, masks & social distancing requested... this is a small gathering, a nice time next to the dog park... They can go to my page or "Leo, A Very Special Dog" for more info and to rsvp. We love your Howl'oween parade, and will miss it greatly! Thanks for helping! Blessings to you & yours! See more

19 YEARS AGO: HISTORY WAS MADE when, for the first time in more than 30 years, unleashed and leashed dogs were permitted to play on a Long Beach city beach on Sun., June 24, 2001, despite complaints from nearby residents that the pooches would leave a mess behind when the day was done. In order to both comply and defy existing ordinances banning unleashed dogs, the city allowed some K-9 freedom on the beach in what was called a "special event" to qualify for the one-time stat...us. Local resident Justin Rudd and his bulldog Rosie organized and hosted that special event -- and the next 20 or so monthly, Sunday dog beach special events that continued successfully through the summer of 2003. Then, after a 15-month Rudd-led pilot program, daily beach off-leash access began in August 2003 and ended Oct. 31, 2004, when the Long Beach City Council unanimously approved the permanent "Dog Beach Zone." This beach area was officially renamed "Rosie's Dog Beach" on Aug. 3, 2010, to honor the life of Rosie the Bulldog, the dog who inspired this canine wonderland. It remains the only off-leash dog beach in L.A. County (10 million inhabitants). JustinRudd.com/rosies
