Getting older does NOT have to mean more pain Recently, we have had a lot of discussion with our clients around aging and pain. Quarantine has everyone feeling creaky and tweaky, wouldn't you say? ... One client had been suffering from hip pain, and by the end of the session the pain was gone and she said Wow! I was so ready to just accept that this pain was going to be with me forever. I though it was just a part of getting older. Many people don’t realize that getting older does not have to mean more pain. And while aging and pain may be related, studies have not been able to directly connect the two. Most often, aches and pains are caused by some other less permanent factor. So why then do people have more aches and pains as they get older? It all has to do with LACK OF MOVEMENT. We live in a society that has fostered the idea that as we age, we have to be more cautious with our movement and activity level, and if it hurts then stop moving altogether. We are encouraged to rest more and do fewer things that might be considered risky...but that doesn't mean all movement is risky. Inevitably, if we don’t move our bodies, eventually they will lose the ability to move pain-free. Then the more we avoid movement, the faster we lose strength AND confidence. We see this every day so we get it.. When we are in pain, movement is the last thing we want to do and starting a movement practice or exercise program can be scary. So what can you do?
