The first utility pole was placed in 1844, and carried only telegraph signals. According to the California Public Utility Commission (CPUC) as of 2009, there were 4,228,920 utility poles in California, carrying communication lines, and 209,219 miles of electric transmission distribution lines. As Californians have consumed greater quantities of electricity and communication services, there has been a concomitant increase in the number of weight of faculties attached to utility poles.
