Do you run psychotherapy groups? Narrative Group Therapy offers a unique approach to group work. Narrative groups encourage a storytelling model, where curiosity and inquiry are preferred over conflict, or the attribution of blame, stages of development or an expectation of ‘regression’. Adopting the narrative metaphor privileges stories about lived experience, thoughtful reflection, and collaboration. If you’d like to experience these ideas with Stephen Burton, LMFT, and Kevin O’Bryan, AMFT, in a whole day workshop environment in Hollywood, please go to this website and consider signing up! The workshop will take place on Sunday, October 14, 2018. https://www.educationalnarratives.com/narrative-group-thera

New group for gay men: Despite the huge advance of marriage equality just a few years ago, many adults today grew up in a world where being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, was considered something shameful, something to be hidden, and denied. The consequences of growing up in a world where there you are made to feel so much shame can it can lead to suicide. For the survivors, there are still the devastating effects of being denied validation from the people who were ...supposed to love you the most, and you were made to feel less than, not as good as, or as damaged in some deep way. These ways of thinking about yourself can lead to problems with self-esteem, self-confidence and the ability to form long-term relationships. The more experience a person has of that fundamental rejection, or the experience of abuse, the more likely they are to develop mental health problems, and to form deeply unsatisfying relationships. Yet, LGBT people have also learned to survive in a hostile world, and a majority live happy contented lives. As a psychotherapist, I see that many of LGBT people’s problems are rooted in their feeling rejected for who they are, for taking inside of themselves all the negativity and hatred, or homophobia, of ignorant fearful people. I believe it is possible to escape entirely, or least minimize, the effects of these negative views and lead to improved self-esteem, self-confidence and improved relationships with others. I am offering an initial group for gay men, that will take place in Hollywood, on Wednesday evenings (7:00-8:30 pm). You can contact me through the numbers in the flier I have attached to this post.
