Our second selection for the 2020 PROXY [virtual] FALL FILM FESTIVAL is SONG WITHOUT A NAME, the feature length debut of Peruvian writer/director Melina León. Song Without a Name concerns Georgina, a young Andean woman whose newborn baby is stolen from her in 1980s Peru. It is a stark and timely reminder of the real human suffering inflicted by corrupt institutions before marginal changes in policy are instituted and celebrated. To kick things off, we explored and confronted the legacy of explicitly racist lending policies and urban planning programs that have shaped Hayes Valley and the Western Addition over the 20th century, and how we, as a curatorial initiative and a physical space, can help dismantle white supremacy in San Francisco. . PROXY [virtual] SPRING SERIES With the Bay Area staying home to stem the coronavirus outbreak, we’re pivoting to an online take on our PROXY Spring Series. We still recommend you take the time to watch PARASITE - but we’ve offered some other ways to stay busy, to stay active, and most importantly, to support those most in need during these times. Stay safe everyone!

We founded PROXY in 2010 with a mission to bring people together. And it's with our community in mind, and in our hearts, that we announce the cancellation of the entire 2020 PROXY Spring Series of free outdoor film screenings, scheduled for March 20 through April 17. Our local and state leaders have emphasized that each of us can play a crucial role in flattening the curve of the COVID-19 outbreak, and many of us are already doing our part. We’re staying home, doing the elb...ow bump, and washing our hands like never before. Canceling large public gatherings like our events at PROXY is another important measure. While we may not be able to get together, let's join in staying informed, checking in with our neighbors, and taking care of our loved ones, our community and ourselves. In the coming weeks we’ll be sharing some playlists, movie ideas, things we’re reading, and observations as we weather this unusual time. As always, we're stronger together.

Exciting news! In early December, work will finally begin on SFMTA's Octavia "Open Streets" Project, which will close the blocks of Octavia Street alongside Patricia's Green and PROXY. The culmination of years of testing with temporary closures and the unanimous approval of the SFMTA Board in July, the project will expand this much loved open space and further enhance walkability and sense of community in Hayes Valley.
