Approximately 10-12% of the population is affected by temporomandibular disorders. The majority of patients seeking treatment are women, particularly those of childbearing age. Furthermore, the ratio of women to men increases with the severity of symptoms. It is generally accepted that the etiology of TMDs is multifactorial. There are several studies exploring the potential role of hormonal fluctuations as a contributing risk factor for TMD-related pain. Research is ongoing w...ith regard to the role estrogen receptors play in targeting inflammation as well as the origins of TMD-related pain. Regardless of the patient's gender, the reason that most patients seek treatment is pain. As clinicians, it is critical that we use evidence-based approaches to treat this pain, based on the unique needs of each individual patient. There is no one-size-fits all treatment, but it is agreed upon that conservative measures are preferred whenever possible. November is National TMJ Awareness Month. Check out our TMD short courses on www.AlignerMaster.com if you are interested in learning more about the diagnosis and treatment of these painful disorders. #progressiveorthodonticseminars #posfamily #tmd #tmj #dental #orthodontics

The TMJ is the most unique joint in the body, as it is two joints in one, the right and left joint being connected by the mandible. It endures more wear and tear than any other joint because we use it all the time, and we can't rest one side without resting the other. Only when a person is sleeping might the jaw get some rest, but only if there is no parafunctional habit or sleep disturbance (such as snoring, apnea) at play. The jaw is said to be a litmus test for stress. Whe...n a person encounters a stressor, they often tense the jaw because their fight or flight response has been stimulated. Massage, which can stimulate the opposite response (known as rest and repose) is one of the most effective ways to relieve the stress. As dentists, we should be teaching our patients exercises to relax their jaw and offering them tools and treatments to reduce their stress. Let's help our patients give their jaw a rest! November is National TMJ Awareness Month. At POS and the McGann Postgraduate School of Dentistry, we believe in comprehensive care, and we're proud to offer continuing education courses about temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) to our doctors.
