Dear POMDR Community- Chyna’s story is the epitome of why POMDR exists. In 2018, we were contacted by a woman named Catherine. She was going through cancer treatments and needed help walking her 15-year-old Terrier mix, Chyna. We were able to put together a brigade of volunteers to walk Chyna 7 days a week for about a year. Catherine made a wonderful recovery and for another year she was doing well and walking Chyna herself. ... She signed up for our Perpetual Care program to make sure that if something were to happen to her, Chyna would come into our care. Then in April of 2020, Catherine’s health began to decline again. Even during the pandemic, we had a handful of dedicated volunteers who started helping get Chyna out for walks again. Sadly, in November, Catherine passed away. Chyna immediately came to POMDR. She was now 17 years old. She was placed in foster care with one of the volunteers who regularly walked her. We weren’t sure if Chyna would find an adopter at 17, but it only took two months in foster care before a wonderful senior person with a heart of gold, fell in love with Chyna and adopted her! We feel so blessed to be supported by people who care about senior dogs and senior people as much as we do! Thank you! #adoptdontshop #compassion #community #seniordogsrock

ADOPT: Dezmond Poodle Mix | Male | 17 lbs | 15 y/o) https://www.peaceofminddogrescue.org/adopt.php ... Adorable senior gentleman seeking his forever home to spend his golden years with. Meet Dezmond! Dezmond came to us with one remaining eye that we found out actually had a ruptured cornea! The poor guy! Thankfully we removed it and he's feeling much better. He is now completely blind and working to adjust to his new circumstances. He toddles around just fine, gently bumping into things as he goes, but can walk on leash nicely. We think he is looking for familiarity, so he would do best with someone patient who can get him into a grounded routine but who can also learn his cues and respect his boundaries. Because he is blind, he can be startled, and when he's afraid, he can be nippy. He needs a dog-savvy, special person to love him as he is. He would do best in a calm, adult-only forever home. He is good about being in his crate. He likes to be by his person to snuggle, and he may give some kisses. Otherwise, he is also an explorer, and a safe environment will be needed for him. One without stairs is a must. A home with other dogs and cats is fine as he will get along well. Let’s find this senior gentleman his forever home. #poodle #seniordogsrock #compassion #adoptdontshop

ADOPT: Rainier Rat Terrier Mix | Female | 18 lbs | 11 y/o https://www.peaceofminddogrescue.org/adopt.php... Dear little Rainier was saved by a good Samaritan who saw her in danger along a busy highway, and we are so grateful! This sweet gal is initially a bit shy of new people, but quickly becomes sociable with humans and is nonreactive to other pups. Rainier is a perfect angel with kitties too, according to her foster mom, who reports that her cats sit on Rainier and groom her! She is an easy-going, trusting little soul who will follow you around the house. Rainier will most likely be happiest in a home where somebody is home most of the time. Treats and toys make transitions easier for her. Rainier has been fine socializing with children. Rainier seems to have a hearing deficit but is learning to respond to signal training - isn't it wonderful that old dogs CAN learn new tricks? She walks well on leash, stopping here and there to read her "pee-mail." Her energy level is fairly low, so short walks suit her just fine. Rainier's goal in life is just to be at your side - she's ready for your home and YOUR LOVE. Her ideal home would be a quiet one, maybe even with another mellow doggy friend who could show her the ropes. Rainier is so deserving of all the care and attention you can give her! #ratterrierworld #adoptdontshop #whorescuedwho

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: Kathleen Kane On this #ThankfulThursday, we would like to extend a big round of appaws to Kathleen Kane!!! ... Kathleen has been a volunteer since 2014 and has supported POMDR in many, many ways. We are so grateful to have your heartfelt support, Kathleen! We asked Kathleen why she volunteers: I was trying to convince my partner to adopt a third dog and was met with a resounding, NO. A friend I worked with told me about POMDR and how they need fosters for senior dogs. To this, my partner said yes. So, we began fostering. The more I got to know about POMDR, the more I wanted to be a bigger part of their mission, helping senior dogs and senior people. To date it has been an incredible experience. I have volunteered with Helping Paw, in the office at the Bauer Center, doing intake photos, fostering, I am the social media volunteer for their Instagram account and now I am volunteering in the vet clinic as I attend vet technician school. I volunteer because I believe in their mission. The work that they do for both dogs and people is inspiring. The outpouring of compassion and kindness is inspiring. Volunteering has given me such an amazing discovery of the love that senior dogs have to give. My heart melts for them. Each foster that we have had has been an opportunity to learn about love, patience, kindness, and trust. It is an incredibly wonderful thing to open your heart and home to a senior dog in need. I encourage everyone to consider being a volunteer for POMDR. The good you will be doing for senior dogs and people will be a rewarding experience. If you cannot foster, there are so many ways in which you can help as a volunteer. The staff and incredible volunteers are amazing, kind, generous people who put their hearts on the line daily for these senior dogs and people. As you get to know more about POMDR, I guarantee you will be so thankful you chose to get involved. You will not be disappointed. As Kathleen shared, POMDR offers many ways to volunteer. Checo has been a beloved family pet for 18 years. When he stopped eating and had a persistent cough, his family sought medical help but also needed some assistance with the costs associated with care and treatment. His family’s income like many has been impacted by COVID. Checo’s family contacted POMDR’s Helping Paw Program and we can report that Checo is getting the treatment and care he needs. Our Helping Paw program assists pet guardians facing challenging times i...n keeping their beloved dogs and cats, and provides a bridge to help them stay together as long as possible. To our POMDR community of supporters... You did it! Thank you to all of our generous donors who helped us raise $378,201 through the Monterey County Gives! Campaign. Funds will be used to run our veterinary clinic, which provides medical care for the dogs we bring into our program. 788 Individuals donated to POMDR. That is almost TWICE as many as last year! Wow! ... We are so honored by the faith this amazing community has in our ability to make a difference for senior dogs and senior people. ADOPT: Conan Terrier/Chihuahua Mix | Male | 10 lbs | 3 y/o https://www.peaceofminddogrescue.org/adopt.php... Are you a fan of high energy, rambunctious dogs full of zoomies & outbursts of love? Well, let us introduce you to Conan! Conan is a fun-loving dog who zips about and seems to process the world as fast as the latest computers. And can we all agree that he totally rocks the beard? Conan is very affectionate and will squirm in your arms to feel hugged all over and is quick to strike with his kisses. He will do this with people he just met, as he sees everyone as someone to love. He does bark at new things, and for attention, and sometimes just to hear himself speak. He needs a home without shared walls, which means he is not an apartment dog. He is too vocal when excited or when trying to communicate. Conan is easy to carry, pretty good on leash, and very friendly with other dogs. He is treat motivated and wants to please. He does settle down when ignored and is at an age in which his zest for life often explodes out of him, so he may be more relaxed in time. Just be ready for lots of kisses between now and then. Let’s find this high energy, big love sweetheart his forever home! #adoptdontshop #happy #cuddles #terrier #chihuahua
