Today is National Brother’s Day. Thank You to our sibling sets who chose a profession of protecting our community together, including Sergeants Jeff and John Jacobs. Their family tradition of service began with the father, Commander Craig Jacobs, who retired from LBPD in 2002.

From Mike Minton: I just saw the video of the conversation between a Cypress College student defending police officers in general and the rude demeanor of his teacher who is anti police. This young 19 year old man, a student, engaged his teacher in a calm and respectful manner defending police offices and even asked his teacher who would she would call if she was in trouble and needed help. She kept interrupting him and condemning police and said she didn’t trust any of them ...and wouldn’t call the police. He went on to say when asked by the TV reporter if he was worried about his grade or status at the school because he disagreed with his teacher and he responded he definitely was concerned but that he believed the vast majority of police officers are good and that he had a right to voice his opinion. The teacher has taken a leave of absence since this went viral. The real problem here is this person, a teacher , is teaching our your minds her vicious, poisonous, polluted opinion to our young people who may look to her for guidance. I believe that, just like police officers, there are a few bad teachers and that the vast majority are good hard working compassionate people who have the best interest of our your people in their hearts. And I refuse to do what to many of our society do and that is paint them all the same color. Good for you young man for standing up for what you believe and speaking your mind calmly and respectfully. See more

Early this morning, DMPD officers responded to assist DMFD with a structure fire at an apartment complex in the 3700 block of MLK Parkway. Officers arrived to ...find that heavy smoke was preventing their access to the 3rd floor. Senior Police Officers Cole Johnson, Craig Vasquez, Tyler Kelley, and Casey Sanders quickly positioned themselves outside the building, and caught children that were dropped to them from a 3rd floor window. All are well... Please join us in thanking these officers, and those who serve with them, for leaving their homes every day to help make Des Moines the safe and secure city that it is! **Top L, SPO Cole Johnson, Top R SPO Craig Vasquez, Bottom L SPO Casey Sanders, Bottom R SPO Tyler Kelley

45 years ago today (September 15, 1975) LBPD Police Officer Robert Birdsall was shot and killed while searching for a suspect wanted for armed robbery, kidnappi...ng, and attempted murder. Officer Birdsall confronted the man near 23rd Street and Orange Avenue in the city of Signal Hill. The suspect surprised Officer Birdsall and killed him in a darkened oil field lot. Officer Birdsall was transported to St. Mary's Hospital where he was pronounced dead several hours later in the early morning of September 16. The suspect hid in a nearby cemetery for hours while numerous officers searched the area. A K-9 unit from a neighboring city eventually found the suspect. The tremendous capabilities of the K-9 unit led to the initiation of a K-9 unit in Long Beach PD. The suspect was later convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to death May 5th, 1976. His sentence was later commuted to life. Officer Birdsall served with the Long beach Police Department for 13 years. He was survived by his wife and four children. One of those children, Richard, honorably served as a Long Beach Police Officer and Homicide Detective for many years before retiring. We remember you sir, and we honor your legacy.

In 2012 , the Chula Vista, California Police Department ran an e-mail forum (a question and answer exchange) with the topic being, "Community Policing." One of ...the civilian e-mail participants posed the following question, "I would like to know how it is possible for police officers to continually harass people and get away with it?" >From the "other side" (the law enforcement side) Sgt. Bennett, obviously a cop with a sense of humor replied: "First of all, let me tell you this...it's not easy. In Chula Vista, we average one cop for every 600 people. Only about 60% of those cops are on general duty (or what you might refer to as "patrol") where we do most of our harassing The rest are in non-harassing departments that do not allow them contact with the day to day innocents. At any given moment, only one-fifth of the 60% patrollers are on duty and available for harassing people while the rest are off duty. So roughly, one cop is responsible for harassing about 5,000 residents. When you toss in the commercial business, and tourist locations that attract people from other areas, sometimes you have a situation where a single cop is responsible for harassing 10,000 or more people a day. Now, your average ten-hour shift runs 36,000 seconds long. This gives a cop one second to harass a person, and then only three-fourths of a second to eat a donut AND then find a new person to harass. This is not an easy task. To be honest, most cops are not up to this challenge day in and day out. It is just too tiring. What we do is utilize some tools to help us narrow down those people which we can realistically harass. The tools available to us are as follows: PHONE: People will call us up and point out things that cause us to focus on a person for special harassment. "My neighbor is beating his wife" is a code phrase used often. This means we'll come out and give somebody some special harassment. Another popular one: "There's a guy breaking into a house." The harassment team is then put into action. CARS: We have special cops assigned to harass people who drive. They like to harass the drivers of fast cars, cars with no insurance or no driver's licenses and the like. It's lots of fun when you pick them out of traffic for nothing more obvious than running a red light. Sometimes you get to really heap the harassment on when you find they have drugs in the car, they are drunk, or have an outstanding warrant on file. RUNNERS: Some people take off running just at the sight of a police officer. Nothing is quite as satisfying as running after them like a beagle on the scent of a bunny. When you catch them you can harass them for hours. STATUTES: When we don't have PHONES or CARS and have nothing better to do, there are actually books that give us ideas for reasons to harass folks. They are called "Statutes"; Criminal Codes, Motor Vehicle Codes, etc...They all spell out all sorts of things for which you can really mess with people. After you read the statute, you can just drive around for a while until you find someone violating one of these listed offenses and harass them. Just last week I saw a guy trying to steal a car. Well, there's this book we have that says that's not allowed. That meant I got permission to harass this guy. It's a really cool system that we've set up, and it works pretty well. We seem to have a never-ending supply of folks to harass. And we get away with it. Why? Because for the good citizens who pay the tab, we try to keep the streets safe for them, and they pay us to "harass" some people. Next time you are in my town, give me the old "single finger wave." That's another one of those codes. It means, "You can't harass me." It's one of our favorites. For those who do have, or have had a close association in the Law Enforcement industry, I am sure that this will have a special meaning.

We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Deputy Dennis Gill. In the early morning hours of Saturday, July 25, 2020, Dennis lost his life in a traffic col...lision, while off-duty, vacationing in Oregon. Dennis was with his daughter, 14, and son, 11, at the time of the collision, and tragically, he and his daughter left this world together. Dennis is survived by his wife, and their son. Dennis was hired in the year 2000 and worked a variety of assignments, including custody at the North County Correctional Facility, court services at Pasadena Court, patrol at West Hollywood Station, Crescenta Valley Station, and County Services Bureau. No matter where he went, Dennis was very well liked by his peers and respected for the extra duties he took on. He received many public commendations for his diligent performance. Dennis was regarded as compassionate, professional, helpful, and respectful person, who was about providing public service with nothing in return. Deputy Gill was an outstanding person with eagerness to work and go above and beyond for anyone without any hesitation. Today, the Department is suffering from a tremendous loss. Our hearts go out to the family, friends and loved ones of Deputy Gill. We lost a great partner, friend and a public servant. Department personnel are with the family offering support during this challenging time, as we work through this tragedy. The traffic investigation is being handled by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office (Oregon). #LASD
