We doubt anyone really takes a good bolt for granted; we are all happy to see good hardware outside. But, honestly, most of us probably won't ever experience what it takes to replace a bolt and as Jim Herson puts it, "the energy that goes into putting to put in a bolt...is just backbreaking" If you are interested in being a bolt replacement volunteer, we can likely help put you in touch with someone but since most of us won't be doing that, we can say thank you to the volunte...ers who are putting their back into it by making sure they have all the bolts they could ever need. Donate to help the @asca_bolt_replacement get bolts into the hands of volunteers! Donations are being matched up to $20,000 until the end of the year! Let's see how many bolts we can help replace! https://www.safeclimbing.org/

"Oftentimes that experience [climbing outdoors] relies on a trust in safe, fixed protection". We wish that we could always rely on the hardware outside. That there were no bad bolts or old hardware on their last leg, but the reality is that there is no central organization ensuring that bolts are being replaced well and regularly. Most bolts are placed by non-profit groups and volunteers whenever they can and they need help - Bodies to help do the replacements and also the h...ardware- lots and lots of hardware. And the hardware is expensive. That is where @asca_bolt_replacement comes in - they get that hardware to the volunteers and non-profits who are replacing them (and do some of the replacements themselves). They also keep a pretty exhaustive list of where their bolts are going! The American Safe Climbing Association is looking for our help to get bolts to those doing the work. They have donors who are matching anything up to $20k until the end of December so let's help if we can. Head over to https://www.safeclimbing.org/ to learn more and donate! #americansafeclimbingassociation #badbolts #climbinghardwarereplacement #sportclimbing #tradclimbing #rockclimbing #climbingismypassion #coloradoclimbing #utahclimbing #californiaclimbing #safeclimbing #climbingstewardship #planitegranite #climbingvolunteer #givebacktoclimbing

Well, 2020 has been...a year. And a lot of us are ready for it to be over. BUT, we have an alternative to just writing off the rest of December. There are still 24 days left until 2021 which means you could: - Put 3 more weeks into wrapping up your current goals - Get a 3-week head start on your 2021 goals - Keep your routine and get 3 weeks further than you would have otherwise - Change up your routine and get 3 weeks of new fun in! ... And, if any of these appeal to you, we have a new On Demand library of classes along with our daily live classes so even if you can't make one of the live ones, you still can still take a class. https://info.planetgranite.com/live-stream

We are counting down the days until we can have you all back into the gym for in-person yoga and fitness classes. And while we wait for that time when we can all celebrate in the same room doing kettlebell swings or downward dog, we'd love to help you continue towards your goals together and maybe add a little routine into otherwise hectic lives. Our instructors are doing live instruction with all our best yoga and fitness classes online. Check out this weekend's classes from Jazmin, MK, and Lisa! https://hubs.ly/H0C3CYL0

Tuesday is election day but it is not the only opportunity you have to vote; it is just the last day to get your vote in. Remember, with physical distancing and other safety precautions, lines will likely be longer if you are voting in-person. Plan for a longer wait time or to vote early. And if you are voting by mail, don't forget to drop off your ballots!

Gym update! You may have seen it when you are making reservations this week but we have a few updates to the gym! No reservations are required Mon-Fri 6am - 2:45pm. You won't be tied to a reservation block or need reservations during this time. We will still be cleaning the gym a lot and we still have capacity limits so check the capacity meter on our website to see how busy the gym is. We close weekdays from 9:45am-11:15am for cleaning and at 2:45pm for the weekday evening... reservation blocks so plan accordingly. Weekends still require reservations as normal. Guest passes, day passes, and new 7-punch pass holders are now welcome! Reservations are still required during peak times (weekday evenings and weekends). https://hubs.ly/H0yMQQN0

For many, the holiday season is a time to pause and take a moment to reflect on what we’re thankful for. This year, we’re grateful for this incredible community--your continued support means the world to us. Your membership means that we’re able to open our doors again, once local and county officials allow. So thank you. When we were open, so many of you were doing your part to keep the community safe. Thank you to those who adjusted your schedule to climb with us during off...-hoursyou made room for those who didn’t have the flexibility in their schedules! And thank you to everyone who wore masks even when you were cruxing out on a move. Thank you for your patience during one of the most challenging times we’ve faced. Thank you to those who are financially able to keep your membership on even though our doors closed. It’s not always going to be like this and we can’t wait to celebrate when that happens. Happy Thanksgiving to those of you who are celebrating it!

We are open again, and it feels so good! But that doesn't mean we can forget about the sanitization cycle. Help protect yourself and others by sanitizing your hands between every climb. The Friction Labs Hygienic 80% alcohol liquid chalk is a great way to do this and to improve your performance on the wall.

Climbing partners are like potato chips - you can't have just one! Well, you can but it is even better when you have a few. That way, you can climb as often as you like without having to worry about your partner having to work late or bailing. If you know someone who is either getting back into climbing or is just starting and would be a great climbing partner for you, there are plenty of ways they could try out the gym without a long term commitment. https://el-cap.com/you-belong-here/

Update! Reservation slots shifting + drop-in spots now available! During the week, we will be shifting our reservations slightly to accommodate a different cleaning schedule. This change will start Monday, Oct. 26th. We’re also now opening up drop-in spots! Every reservation slot will have 10 drop-in spots available for those who didn’t have a chance to book or want to extend their session and stay longer. These will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. ... Don’t forget, we open any unclaimed reservations to drop-ins 30 minutes after the block starts so you can check the capacity meter after that time and drop into the gym if we are not at capacity. We really appreciate all our members and community being so flexible during this time. We know there will be bumps in the road of reopening, but we will continue to do our best for you all. <3 Check out the new time slots and make your reservation: https://planetgranite.com/covid-reopening-information-bay-/

And we’re back! We are happy to report that Santa Clara County is officially in the orange tier and we are opening our climbing walls tomorrow, October 14 at 6a.m. Being in the orange tier also means we were able to responsibly increase our occupancy which means more spots available for climbing or fitness for you! What now? ... - If you had a reservation for October 14 and beyond, that reservation still stands, we look forward to seeing you. - If you don’t have a reservation, make one via our website - https://planetgranite.com/covid-reopening-information-bay-/ - If you are a frozen member who is ready to begin climbing again, simply make a reservation and you will automatically unfreeze. A few updates/reminders: Reservations open 7 days in advance (instead of 15). We heard from many of you that it was challenging to schedule two weeks in advance and keeping on top of changes to their daily schedules. In order to help reduce this headache, we minimized the booking timeline so you all are able to fit your climbing reservations into your daily life. You can use the RGPro Connect app to book and check in on your reservation. Download from your app store. You can also still book on our website. This has been a challenging time for us, as it has for many of you as well, and we're so thankful for your past and continued support. We know how much climbing means to each of you, especially right now, and are sorry for the inconvenience that this has caused but we are happy to be able to open again! #climbing #climbinggym #santaclara

UPDATE: As of today, October 6, we have temporarily stopped climbing activities; however, fitness facilities remain open. The closure is specifically related to county guidelines. We were notified by Santa Clara County that we have been classified as a family amusement business, not a fitness or recreation sport facility. Family amusement and entertainment activities are not permitted in the red tier but are permitted in the orange tier. While the walls are temporarily o...ff-limits, the weight and outdoor cardio areas will remain open. We are actively advocating and collaborating with county officials to get the walls open as soon as possible for you. This is temporary and we are planning to reopen the walls on October 14th when we're hopeful Santa Clara County is in the orange. All reservations through October 13th have been cancelled and members can drop-in for fitness. We are maintaining all reservations October 14th and beyond as we anticipate the walls being open then. THE DETAILS Reservations are no longer needed to visit the gym for cardio and weight areas. Just check the capacity meter on our Reservations and Reopening Page: https://planetgranite.com/covid-reopening-information-bay-/ and drop-in at a time convenient for you. Belmont and San Francisco are still open for climbing! Make reservations via the link above! We expect to be able to resume climbing when we’re in the orange tier possibly as early as Oct 14. WHAT’S NEXT As you can imagine, operating under this new classification has been a tough blow for us all. We’re incredibly sad to suspend climbing, even temporarily. We appreciate your patience and as we operate under the new restrictions and continue to work with county officials. Want to help? Sharing your positive experiences about our operations during COVID with the county could make a difference. https://www.sccgov.org//covi/Pages/business-guidance.aspx

The sanitation cycle is something that you’ve probably seen around the gym... but what is it and why is it important? With the sanitation cycle, we ask that climbers wash their hands/use hand sanitizer before and after climbs. This is mainly because we are unable to wash holds while they are on the wall. There was also a study done at CU Anschutz Medical Campus that has shown some pretty exciting results in the lab when it comes to using@frictionlabs new hygienic secret stuff liquid chalk! We have added the link in our bio if you’d like to read the article! With the sanitation cycle, we hope that it can reduce any potential risk while being in the gym and pulling on some good ole plastic holds. Climb some stuff and wash yo hands! Oh, and wear your mask properly please

Planet Granite Sunnyvale 09.07.2020

We’ve been open for a whole week! We have loved welcoming everyone back into the gym, but we wanted to remind you all about what our mask policy is and how this simple adjustment helps keep our community safe. Is it super mega comfy? Not all the time. But can it help protect those around us in the gym? You bet it can! Masks are required to enter our facility and must be worn at all times- even while climbing and working out. Here is a friendly reminder that when wearing ...a mask/face covering in the gym (and out in public), the wearer’s mouth AND nose must be covered at all times. Although we miss seeing everyone’s smiles, we know that this isn’t forever, and we are committed to doing all we can to keep our gym as safe as possible under our county and state guidelines. We can’t thank y’all enough for your continued support during this time. Let’s keep this habit up, along with physical distancing and practicing the sanitation cycle so that we can keep this good thing going!

Today we wanted to give a shout out to Makayla, a student that went through The Big Homies Project, a project that focuses on connecting youth within communities of color with mentors and opportunities to reach their full potential. For Global Climbing Day a few weeks back we asked Makayla this question: What was your wall and how did you crush it?... This was her response: For the longest time, my wall has been my self-confidence. I used to try to convince myself that I didn’t care what other people thought of me, but every time I thought it or said it aloud even, I was lying and didn’t even know it. I don’t just think this was something I developed on my own, I believe it was a byproduct of my environment. Going to a predominantly white institution as a young black girl definitely makes it hard to fit in and blend with the crowd, which for whatever reason is so important at such a young age. It wasn’t until eighth grade, when I started going to the Boys and Girls Club, that I started to appreciate my differences and love my uniqueness. I was surrounded by other beautiful black and brown people and I couldn’t help but love what I was surrounded by. This in turn helped me to love myself and really embrace every aspect of myself. From there my confidence just skyrocketed. I was more open to trying out new things and talking to new people. The Boys and Girls Club, The Big Homie Project, and my newfound love for rock climbing all played such a huge role in this journey and I’m not too sure where I’d be if I didn’t have these things. We are stoked that these organizations and rock climbing have had this impact on Makayla, and we hope to see her on our walls again when she’s not crushing it at her University!
