TRAFFIC TIP TUESDAY While having your dog jump in the back of your truck bed and going for a ride on the open road may seem like a cool thing to do, it could at... bare minimum, end up costing you a traffic citation, but even worse, your dog’s life. This may sound extreme but according to American Humane, 100,000 dogs are killed each year in accidents involving riding in truck beds. If you are anything like our commander, Captain Becky Hagen, you understand how important a dog’s life can mean to someone. 23117(a) of the California Vehicle Code states No person driving a motor vehicle shall transport any animal in the back of the vehicle in a space intended for any load on the vehicle on a highway unless the space is enclosed or has side and tail racks to a height of at least 46 inches extending vertically from the floor, the vehicle has installed means of preventing the animal from being discharged, or the animal is cross tethered to the vehicle, or is protected by a secured container or cage, in a manner which will prevent the animal from being thrown, falling, or jumping from the vehicle. If you have to travel with your dog in the truck bed you should at bare minimum cross-tether the dog. Secure the dog with at least two points of restraint on both sides of the truck bed. A better option would be to crate the dog. Be sure to use a crate that is covered on all sides and is big enough to protect the dog from weather. You should look for a non-metal materiel light in color to prevent it from heating up in the summer. Be sure to secure the crate within the truck bed. By following some simple rules and using commonsense, you can help reduce the number of dogs killed each year. The mission of the California Highway Patrol is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security.
