Volunteer Appreciation Day was a big success! Thanks to everyone who came!

North Oakland Village 30.10.2020

Dear North Oakland Members, Volunteers and Friends. In compliance with CDC, State of California and County of Alameda Public Health Guidelines, we are closing down all gatherings of North Oakland Village (NOV) as of today, at least until April 1. We will continue to evaluate health advisories over the next couple of weeks and will continue to place the well-being of our community as our first priority and concern. In the meantime, we are compiling a set of alternative solutio...ns to the isolation that is being asked of us. Our members and volunteers will soon be hearing more about this. In the meantime, let's pause for a moment and reframe what it is we're doing right now. I have found this lovely, poetic framework helpful and hope you will too. Pandemic What if you thought of it as the Jews consider the Sabbath the most sacred of times? Cease from travel. Cease from buying and selling. Give up, just for now, on trying to make the world different than it is. Sing. Pray. Touch only those to whom you commit your life. Center down. And when your body has become still, reach out with your heart. Know that we are connected in ways that are terrifying and beautiful. (You could hardly deny it now.) Know that our lives are in one another’s hands. (Surely, that has come clear.) Do not reach out your hands. Reach out your heart. Reach out your words. Reach out all the tendrils of compassion that move, invisibly, where we cannot touch. Promise this world your love-- for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, so long as we all shall live. --Lynn Ungar 3/11/20 lynnungar.com We will be in touch! Wash hands carefully! New York Times bestselling author and Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne sounds the alarm in his book Code Red, calling for an alliance between progressives and moderates to seize the moment and restore hope in America's future for the 2020 Presidential election. Join a group of villagers to hear Dionne speak at the Hillside Club in Berkeley, 7:30 pm, Thursday, February 27. We will arrange for a bus to pick us up at the office. Because the event is expected to sell out, we have purchased 10 tickets at $12.50 each. Please contact Teresa Allen at [email protected] or (510) 701-0298 to receive a ticket
