The 4th grade students recently learned about the 21 missions built in California during the Spanish control of California; each student created a "Peek and Find" mission project. They drew one of the missions, researched information, and typed five important or interesting facts about the specific mission, which were then glued behind doors and opening flaps on the picture. Fourth graders also watched a video presented by the California Indian Museum and Cultural Center that told the story of the mission era from the California Native perspective. . #FourthGrade #CaliforniaMission #Research #HandsOn #peninsulaheritageschool #SmallclassesBigeducation #whereeverychildshines #RollingHillsEstates #PalosVerdesEstates #RedondoBeach #ManhattanBeach #HermosaBeach #LA #SouthBay #WednesdayWisdom

Fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Cathy Gilbert shares her read aloud experiences: Reading aloud to my class is my favorite time of the day! This year, we dove deep into Flora and Ulysses (2016) by Kate DiCamillo, which was so rewarding. We noted with the students the rich complexity of the characters and the roller coaster emotions that they experience, laughing at the quirky and funny twists, and gasping at those startling moments that make you pause and think, long after the boo...k is put down. These are among my most treasured moments with my class. We also read Number the Starts (20122) and are currently immersed in By the Great Horn Spoon (1988)! . . #FourthGrade #peninsulaheritageschool #SmallclassesBigeducation #whereeverychildshines #RollingHillsEstates #PalosVerdesEstates #RedondoBeach #ManhattanBeach #HermosaBeach #LA #SouthBay #MondayMotivation See more

Book Club! Adults are not the only ones enjoying the pleasure of analyzing and discussing books with their peers. . As part of the Reading Workshop program, students at Peninsula Heritage School choose books and then gather with their peers in Book Clubs. . As the Sixth Grade boys in this Book Club socially distance around the PHS playground equipment, Tristan presents his reflections on the theme and characters in the novel Holes (1998), as well as sharing particular passage...s that he finds especially meaningful. . Mrs. Mahoney observes, Holes is a great book to engage boys at this age. They always enjoy it I guess it’s all the digging that gets them! Other Sixth Grade Book Clubs recently focused on the following realistic novels: Hatchet (2006), Fish in a Tree (2017), Dead End in Norvelt (2013), When My Name is Keoko (2012), and Wish (2017). Such great reading opportunities for our students! . #BookClub #Read #SixthGrade #Math #HandsOn #peninsulaheritageschool #SmallclassesBigeducation #whereeverychildshines #RollingHillsEstates #PalosVerdesEstates #RedondoBeach #ManhattanBeach #HermosaBeach #LA #SouthBay See more
