The Montessori Nido is a calm, cozy, homelike environment for babies. Nido, which means nest in Italian, captures the idea of warmth and security. Our Children's House student learned how to do the Phonetic Object Box this afternoon. This work consists of a box with several objects whose names are spelled phonetically. In the initial presentation, the guide writes the name of the object and the child sounds out the word. Once all objects have been labeled, the child is free to practice on her own, choosing a label, sounding out the word, then placing the label with the object that it describes and moves on to the next l...abel. This work is done to help the child realize that he can analyze and synthesize the graphic symbols of a written word to discover its meaning. It is an introduction to reading as silent communication. Our Nido student is working on using a zipper with the dressing frame material. This will help him as he gets older to zip up his own clothing, lunchbox or backpack. Confidence Your tiny baby is trying new things all the time. Each time your baby practices a new skill, and then masters it, she strengthens the sense of confidence that will stay with her throughout her lifetime. Even your tiny baby imitates others, and can begin to take small steps towards independent self-care. Your Montessori guides will gently support your baby to learn to do things for herself, striking just the right balance between making your little one feel safe and loved, and identifying the right moment to encourage her to try something new.

Mirror polishing is being done by one of our young toddlers! She remembered almost all of the steps on her own. Self-feeding is one of the early ways that your baby can practice independence in the area of self-care. As your baby learns to sit reliably, she sits at a tiny table on a sturdy chair, sized so that she can crawl in and out of the chair herself. We provide real dishes, glasses and utensils, just her size, as soon as she is ready to learn to use them. The adult does as much as necessary but as little as possible at any given stage, helping your baby to do it all by myself!
