NON-ESSENTIAL BORDER CROSSING SUSPENDED Global Level 4 Health Advisory Non-essential travel across the San Ysidro Border Crossing between the United States and Mexico will be suspended tonight beginning at midnight and will continue for 30 days, at which point the policy will be reviewed.... The Department of State advises U.S. citizens to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of COVID-19. U.S. citizens currently outside of the United States and who live in the United States should arrange for immediate return to the United States, unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period. U.S. citizens who currently live abroad should avoid all international travel for the time being. Many countries are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks and implementing travel restrictions and mandatory quarantines, closing borders, and prohibiting non-citizens from entry with little advance notice. If you choose to travel internationally, your travel plans may be severely disrupted, and you may be forced to remain outside of the United States for an indefinite time frame. Essential travel relating to the San Ysidro Border includes activities to keep the critical supply chains open to ensure that food, fuel and lifesaving medicines reach people on both sides of the border. The border will also remain open to those crossing to receive medical attention as well as those crossing for employment, including those working in what is called essential employment and services such as food distribution, health care and public transportation. Non-essential travel includes tourism, sightseeing, recreation and shopping.

Pedwest Southbound to open Monday, July 31st SAN YSIDRO - PedWest southbound inspection lanes are scheduled to open next week for pedestrians headed south into Tijuana. This will offer a second option for those crossing on foot from San Ysidro to Tijuana. On Monday July 31st, Mexico’s National Immigration Institute is prepared to open southbound pedestrian lanes for border crossers entering at the El Chaparral port of entry. ... PedWest is part of the San Ysidro Port remodel and upgrade and the new Mexican entry port will offer an additional option for the large number of daily southbound pedestrian crossers from San Diego Diego to Tijuana. The opening of Mexico’s southbound pedestrian entrance comes a year after U.S. authorities inaugurated the northbound 14-lane PedWest entrance. While the northbound PedWest access is open 24 hours a day, Mexico has yet to announce the operating hours for southbound pedestrian traffic into Mexico at the new Pedwest crossing point. Mexico’s southbound pedestrian lanes could come in handy later this year, when the final phase of the $741 million reconstruction of the San Ysidro Port of Entry will temporarily reduce the number of southbound vehicle lanes feeding from Interstate-5 into Mexico’s El Chaparral Port of Entry. For approximately two months starting on Sept. 25, the number of lanes will be reduced from five to three to accommodate the realignment of a portion of highway. For the ensuing 18 months, until the project is completed, traffic will be funneled through four southbound lanes feeding into El Chaparral.

Delay in the Opening of Pedwest Southbound The opening of Pedwest, southbound into Mexico and scheduled for the end of June, has been delayed due to construction and changes to the border crossing including the installation of office for Banjército for the payment for permits and tourist cards for foreigners entering Mexico. Pedwest is located in the Chaparral border crossing and was first opened for pedestrian crossing from Tijuana to San Ysidro in early July 2016, and a yea...r later is expected to now become a bideirectional pedestrian border crossing. Originally Pedwest was only intended to be for northbound pedestrian traffic but the decision to open it up both ways was made as part of a request from the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce. It is expected that the work will be completed in the next 10 days and the southbound pedestrian border crossing will open by July 15th.
