This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.... 16 You said, ‘No, we will flee on horses.’ Therefore you will flee! You said, ‘We will ride off on swift horses.’ Therefore your pursuers will be swift! 17 A thousand will flee at the threat of one; at the threat of five you will all flee away, till you are left like a flagstaff on a mountaintop, like a banner on a hill. 18 Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!

We all have basic needs that if not met stop us from meeting our potential. Most are simple and many of us thrive in a culture that provides them. The basic needs for human potential are contained in Psalm 23, David’s poem about God as our Shepherd. Though he’s speaking to the nation of Israel, we recognize his personal journey of self-discovery in God. God has provided all he needs and brought him to a restful place in life, full of love and mercy. He’s satisfied because God...Continue reading

Psalm 114 (NASB) 114 When Israel went forth from Egypt, The house of Jacob from a people of strange language, 2 Judah became His sanctuary,... Israel, His dominion. 3 The sea looked and fled; The Jordan turned back. 4 The mountains skipped like rams, The hills, like lambs. 5 What ails you, O sea, that you flee? O Jordan, that you turn back? 6 O mountains, that you skip like rams? O hills, like lambs? 7 Tremble, O earth, before the Lord, Before the God of Jacob, 8 Who turned the rock into a pool of water, The flint into a fountain of water. See more

One way to deepen a dialogue with someone you know, especially when you are trying to carry your argument forward, is to remind the person what they have said. Many of these psalms contain in them the word remember. The word is used to remind God what He has promised, and the condition that the worshipper is in. What the psalmist is doing is pointing out the contradiction between the promise and what is happening at the time. The context of this psalm is most likely in the ...Continue reading

Despair is a universal experience shared by all ethnic groups, cultures, religions and nations. It’s that unique feeling of the human animal that opens us up to fear, powerlessness and hopelessness, but also worthlessness, guilt and shame. When despair hits us we’re paralyzed, not knowing which way to turn to find some peace or fresh air. It’s like a blackness that walls us in and all we want to do is stay in bed all day. There events that trigger this, or it might be a free-...Continue reading

A friend told me he is tempted to believe in God because, if God exists, he fears his power, saying, If God exists, I know that he can kill me. This isn’t an exaggeration or offhand comment winking at my faith in God. I believe most people, when cognizant of the world around them, with cursory knowledge of the Bible, believe in a power that moves the world. In the Old Testament most of God’s power is seen through destruction, producing fear in the faithful and non-faithful....Continue reading

The Jewish people have always been messianic, seeing their hope in the future. Since they left Egypt, they have been looking ahead: first to the Promised Land, then during the time of the Judges to securing the nation and after David looking for a King that to stabilize their spiritual vision and place in the world. This psalm is an important part of that hope, a vision of a leader that would save them, the Messiah. The New Testament writers saw this hope in Jesus. This Psalm...Continue reading

In Psalm 1 we’re introduced to the scoffers and wicked of the world that use evil intent to distract the righteous and try to make their way to the leadership in Israel to poison the good will of God. Today in Psalm 2 we are introduced to the enemies of Israel. Nations that plan to bring Israel down. They are enemies of God, like the scoffers in Psalm 1, but are also there to destroy by violence Israel’s way of life. It’s a threat that needs a strong leader to overcome. The P...Continue reading
