Opinion | South Korea's fertility rate is 0.98, half the number needed to maintain long-term population stability, and falling. This means it's heading for a demographic crash, ultimately leading to: lower productivity, slow growth in living standards and an aging population. Noah Smith says, "There are no known policies that can raise birth rates substantially...offering financial incentives for childbirth and providing free child care has only a modest effect." Immigratio...n is the main option, but it comes with a big problem: With fertility rates falling across the planet, it can't work for the entire world. Automation, financially sustainable pension systems and reduced medical costs are some ways to prep for a graying world. Smith writes, "The gray wave probably can’t be stopped, but the human race will have to find ways to cope." https://bloom.bg/32FJ4o4 See more
