Last week we had our first optional activity. A bunch of us went paddle boarding in the Newport Back Bay. The weather was great and the students and teachers had a terrific time.

This past Wednesday, our small group of Kinder and 1st Grade students returned for on campus learning. It has been great to have them back. They are doing wonderfully following social distancing rules. Online learning has even more challenges for young students, so it is great we have begun in-person teaching with them.

Great news again from Rose Zhang of Pacific Academy! Rose is now competing in the Rolex Girls Junior Championship in Missouri. She broke the amateur course record at the Dalhousie Golf Club with a score of 8-under-par 64 on the 18th of this month, and held the first-round lead at the Rolex Girls Junior Championship by five strokes. She had a bogey-free round including birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 to give her a commanding lead and beat the amateur course record previously held by... Abbey Carlson by one stroke. We are all cheering for her at the school! Rose won the 2019 Rolex Tournament of Champions last year, and has kicked off the season well with her championship from the 2020 U.S. Women's Amateur earlier this summer. As the No. 1 player in the Rolex AJGA Rankings and reigning Rolex Junior Player of the Year, Zhang has seven AJGA titles and holds a four-stroke lead heading into the final round. We are so proud of Rose for all her achievements this year. We wish her all the best on the last day of the Rolex game today! The 2020 Rolex Girls Junior Championship is an all-girls invitational that brings the top-ranked junior golfers in the world to compete at Dalhousie Golf Club for a 72-hole, stroke-play tournament. The Championship this year is highlighted by 13 Rolex Junior All-Americans and 41 AJGA champions, including 15 players with wins this year. It is no doubt one of the most challenging tournaments for the highest-level junior golf amateurs to attend each year.

Congratulations to Pacific Academy Class of 2020 graduate, Makur Maker who has committed to play basketball at prestigious Howard University in Washington, D.C. Makur, a five-star basketball recruit and ranked #16 by ESPN this year, is the highest ranked player to commit to a Historically Black College or University. Foregoing April's NBA draft and college powerhouses such as UCLA and Kentucky, Makur recently wrote on Twitter: I need to make the HBCU movement real so that others will follow."
