This week's #WomanCrushWednesday is Dr. Jalika Joyner, the new Fogarty GloCal Health Fellow joining EpiCenter for Disease Dynamics' EEIDI team! Jalika is a South Carolina native who grew up in Georgia. She attended Emory University for undergraduate studies and then went on to complete her veterinary medicine degree at NC State College of Veterinary Medicine & Veterinary Hospital in 2019. Though she has wanted to be a veterinarian since she was a kid, the interest in human-an...imal-environment interface came about during undergraduate school and developed into her current interest in One Health research. She gained exposure to this field by performing research in Uganda on salmonella among mountain gorillas and livestock in the Bwindi region. As a fellow, she will be returning to the same region to research mosquito behavior as they pertain to zoonotic arboviruses in Uganda by using mosquito bloodmeal and spatial analyses.

"We should have been ready and watching for all these coronaviruses that we know can jump species earlier...We need to have that early flag, respond quickly and largely, and then scale back when we get it under control or if it’s not a real problem" -Dr. Jonna Mazet on KOSU Radio on the need for shifting mindsets when it comes to pandemic preparedness.

As an open-source tool, SpillOver provides a living platform for ongoing ranking of spillover risk. This tool is intended to start a global conversation that will allow us to go far beyond how we thought about ranking viruses in the past and allow real-time scientific collaboration to identify new threats early," said corresponding author Dr. Jonna Mazet
Successful conservation efforts have led to population increases among the endangered mountain gorillas, but new health challenges may be emerging as a result. As gorilla population densities increase within protected national parks in Rwanda, Uganda, and DR Congo, their susceptibility to infectious diseases may also be increasing. A study was conducted by an international team including our East-Central Africa-based program Gorilla Doctors, investigating parasite infections across the entire range of the mountain gorilla.

This #OneHealthDay we want to share updates from some of our programs and projects specifically addressing components of the holistic #OneHealth approach: human health animal health plant health... environment health But first, what is One Health? The One Health approach recognizes the growing connection between the health of animals, people, plants, and the environment. It understands that humans do not exist in isolation, but are part of the larger, total living ecosystem.

Bats have a unique genetic ability to tolerate many viral infections. Researchers like OHI's own Dr. Brian H. Bird are working to understand how bats keep certain viruses at bay to help us build better immune defenses to viral infections. #BatWeek Learn more: https://daily.jstor.org/what-bats-can-teach-humans-about-/
