The 2019-2020 One Book will be Spare Parts: Four Undocumented Teenagers, One Ugly Robot, and the Battle for the American Dream (2014, FSG) by Joshua Davis. Spare Parts tells the true story of four Latino teenagersborn in Mexico but raised in Phoenix, Arizonawho overcome the odds of attending an underfunded, public school and win a national robotics competition. As a result of their drive and interest in robotics and engineering, the boys find themselves at the University o...f California, Santa Barbara with their robot, Stinky, for a competition sponsored by NASA and the United States Navy. At UCSB, the boys enter Stinky into the Marine Advanced Technology Education Robotics Competition and find themselves competing against better-equipped and prepared teams, such as one from MIT. Their story highlights three, major topics relevant to our current climate and our current students: 1) STEM fields, 2) access to equitable education, and 3) immigration policies. Along with the science and politics, Davis weaves in stories of the young men’s personalities; they are, after all, each unique individuals who participate in ROTC, home-repair, biology, cooking, and working Davis first shared the boys’ story as an article in Wired magazine in 2005. It is also a major motion picture (Lionsgate) directed by Sean McNamara and starring George Lopez, Jamie Lee Curtis, Carlos Penavega, and Marisa Tomei. See more
