OLLI Art Club Legion of Honor May 7, 2021 August 29, 2021 Last Supper in Pompeii: From the Table to the Grave... In AD 79, the Bay of Naples was rocked by the fiery eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pompeii and nearby villages and farms were completely buried under pumice and hot ash, which killed thousands in the midst of their daily activities. Plaster casts of these bodies are a dramatic reminder of this disaster but, like a fly caught in amber, what was preserved gives us a picture of what life was like in a thriving Roman city. The exhibition brings us back into this world by focusing on everyday life and especially on food and drink. Along with the pots, pans, and other paraphernalia in the distribution, preparing, and serving food, this exhibition includes glorious works of art, which reveal the splendor and luxury loved by the wealthy Romans who called Pompeii their home. The Art Club will be going to Museum of Sonoma County to see 35: Thirty-Five Artists for Thirty-Five Years on Wednesday, May 19 from 10 am to 11:30 am. You can RSVP now to attend by sending an email to [email protected] . Want to become a member of the Art Club? Reading Art: Your GPS for Visual Literacy Wednesdays - 1:00 3:00 pm - January 27 March 3 Instructors Heidi Chretien, Ph.D., and Dr. Charlie Goldberg How many times have you said, I love looking at art but, what does it mean? How do I move past looking into really seeing? Reading art is like learning a foreign language only easier and to practice it, one needs only to visit a local gallery or museum.... This interactive course will be team taught by two of OLLI's popular professors, Heidi Chretien and Charlie Goldberg. Together they will guide you as you learn the basic tools and insights into learning how to make sense of what you are seeing; as you learn and think about line, color, light, space and ultimately, composition and design. Each class focuses on one aspect of the visual dialogue as they develop over the centuries. Together you will see and understand what links the Old Masters with contemporary artists. The elements remain the same but each artist recreates and reassembles according to their own vision. You the viewer become an active participant in this visual dialogue and as Marcel Duchamp once said, "there is no Art without an audience". OLLI Art Club Art Spot with Linda Loveland-Reid - The True Story: Gauguin Date: Wednesday, January 13, 2021 1:00 to 2:30 pm Sebastopol Center for the Arts ... Paul Gauguin was born 170 years ago in the cradle of French anarchy, and yet, what do we really know about this man? His art, boldly charged with color, speaks of love but has roots in the darker recesses of the human mind. A wife and five children and a stockbroker career are juxtaposed against his passion to paint. Did he find the earthly paradise that he sought? What really happened between Gauguin and Van Gogh? His modern style pitted Gauguin against the norms of society. In 2015 a Gauguin sold for $300 million. Let’s explore this enigmatic artist and his deeply sensual paintings. OLLI, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Sonoma State University For Students 50 years and older. No Tests, No Grades. Just Learning for the Sake of Learning. Friday, February 19 10:00 to 11:30 am Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas Instructor Linda Loveland-Reid. ... Gertrude Stein, novelist, poet and avid art collector, ‘modestly’ commented that without her, some of the artists and writers that she promoted might not have emerged as they did to take over the art world, e.g., Matisse and Picasso. Gertrude coined the phrase lost generation to describe Hemmingway and his circle. It was a time of assault on all the arts. With her brothers and life partner Alice B Toklas, they lived in Paris during the early movement of progressive art, stubbornly acquiring works that the general population found wildly odd. This is an in depth look at the author who wrote: a rose is a rose is a rose, the enigmatic Gertrude. OLLI Art Club National Color Day. Celebrating the Power of Color and the Decorative Motifs of Batik Happy National Color Day! The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco celebrates the power of color, as seen in the traditional Indonesian decorative motifs of batik the technique of patterning cloth through the application of wax and the eye-catching graphics. ... Batik colors are unique due to the way certain wax blends will "crackle" during handling, allowing lines of color to come through on resisted areas. Few art forms have become as closely associated with a single location as the textile tradition of batik. Although the technique is known in other parts of the world, in Indonesia this art form has reached the highest level of complexity. Please click on the link below to get a glimpse of how Javanese artisans make batik and learn more about their refined and *colorful* techniques. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLTmu5m5bFU&t=3s Want to become a member of the Art Club? This year, the Sonoma County Museum's annual Día de los Muertos exhibition is presented in the Museum's Sculpture Garden for the first time. The outdoor exhibition echoes the setting of many Day of the Dead observances in Mexico which often take place in cemeteries. OLLI Art Club Threads of Jewish Life: Ritual and Other Textiles from the San Francisco Bay Area The Jewish Contemporary Museum Re-opens Saturday, October 17 Following the California Gold Rush, Jewish immigrants in San Francisco laid the foundation for community life, creating benevolent societies, synagogues, and schools across the city. At the same time, they influenced the values and construction of the new metropolis, supporting education, the arts, and social causes. ... Due to the 1906 earthquake and fire, however, very little material evidence of Jewish life in nineteenth-century San Francisco survives. The relationship of Jewish culture to textiles and their importance in reconstructing the Jewish history of the city cannot be overestimated.
