Last week, one of our SROs chatted with Evelyn, a bilingual liasion at one of our local high schools. Evelyn said there was single mother of two students who was struggling to provide food for her family. The mother was unsuccessful at her attempts to go to the food banks because she did not have a vehicle and the church food pantry near her home was closed. Our SROs reached out to the city and our Mission Viejo Police Foundation to help. Together, we were able to provide... the family with food and essential items. We appreciated Evelyn’s concerns for this family and provided her with a challenge coin for being an outstanding citizen.

Last night, an elderly woman wandered away from her home and her family called to ask for assistance to find her. Deputies requested air support and a bloodhound to assist with the search. Duke searched and made announcements from the air and Deputy Assayag and his bloodhound Remi helped deputies search on the ground. Remi alerted her handler to a parked vehicle and deputies confirmed the missing woman was in the front passenger seat. She was escorted home and was safel...y reunited with her family. Big thanks to OCSD K9 Reserves OCSD - Air Support Unit Good girl Remi!

We would like to thank Chabad Mission Viejo for allowing us to be part of The Windows of Light Virtual Chanukah Celebration. Tonight marks the 5th night of Chanukah and we would like to wish everyone Joy, Peace, and Good Health this holiday season and throughout the New Year! Although we could not celebrate in person at the Four Corners (La Paz / Chrisanta) this year, it was great to come together as a community on Zoom!

We have made numerous arrests of catalytic converter thieves over the past few months. It takes less than a minute to steal a catalytic convert from a vehicle which would cost the victim approximately $1500 to replace. Often times, they would work in teams with a lookout. Some of the vehicles they have targeted have been Toyota Prius’s and trucks/SUV (because of the easy access beneath them). ... If you see anyone suspicious near vehicles, please call dispatch at 949-770-6011.

Mission Viejo Police Services is reminding the public to beware and consider taking simple precautions that could help safeguard their vehicles from this and other types of crime. Here are some tips to help boost your vehicle’s security: Park in a secured garage when possible or park in well-lit, observable areas. In parking lots, choose spaces close to building entrances or access roads.... Install motion-sensitive lighting to illuminate driveways used for parking. Consider adding security cameras to oversee driveway and on-street parking areas. Engrave the vehicle vin number onto catalytic converter. This will make it easier to track if stolen. Research catalytic converter anti-theft devices and weigh the pros of having one installed. Note: Cameras and lighting should be checked regularly to ensure their continual functionality. Help us to deter this and other crimes. Be alert and aware while in parking lots, on roadways and in your neighborhood. Report suspicious activity when it’s observed by calling the Sheriff’s non-emergency number at 949-770-6011. If you believe you’re observing a crime in progress, call 911. Your quick call will support the best possible response.

Earlier today, an alert Bank of America (Chrisanta / La Paz) employee noticed a suspicious device attached to the ATM and called deputies. The device was a credit card skimmer used to steal information. If you feel that your ATM/credit card information has been compromised, please check your card history and notify your bank immediately. Big thanks to the employee for keeping our community safe! If you ever noticed anything suspicious looking on an ATM or credit card terminal, do not use it and notify the business.

Around midnight, deputies spotted a suspicious vehicle without license plates driving recklessly through our city. We attempted to stop the vehicle but it sped away reaching speeds of over 100 mph. With the assistance of Duke, our helicopter, we were able to safely follow the vehicle as it drove through Rancho Santa Margarita, unincorporated South County, and into Lake Forest. Both the driver and passenger foot bailed from of the vehicle. Duke spotted one of the suspect...s throwing a loaded handgun away. With the assistance of our patrol K9 Mac and Bloodhound Remi, we located the weapon, both suspects, and took them safely into custody. The suspects were arrested for being a felon in possession of a stolen handgun, having warrants for their arrest, possessing stolen property from dozens of victims, evading, and identity theft related items. Thank you OCSD - Air Support Unit OCSD K9 Reserves OCSD - South Unincorporated Patrol OCSD - Rancho Santa Margarita Police Services OCSD - Lake Forest Police Services OCSD K-9 Unit for helping us keep our community safe!

Last night, we received this picture, video, and message from one of our community members: Proud of these two deputies for going up on a hill with the fire getting closer to rescue this flag. The flag flies normally on hill behind Pastora in Foothill Ranch. In addition , when they where coming off the hill a plane dropped phos-chk on them and after this shot was taken a big 737 jet really dumped another load of pho’s-chk on all of us. The deputies from OCSD at all times were professional and we are thankful to have them protecting our communities. : Gregg Borman Sr, taken on Monday 10-26-20, 5 p.m.
