This week's #funfactfriday comes from NVISION surgeon Dr. Dagny Zhu: Do you wear glasses or contact lenses ? Chances are you’re myopic ie. nearsighted. That means you can see near, but not far. Did you know that myopia is one of the leading causes of visual impairment worldwide? By 2050, 50% of the world’s population is expected to be myopic (that’s 4.8 billion people!) But myopia isn’t just a nuisance that requires glasses and contact lenses, it also increases your chance o...f permanent vision loss from retinal tears and detachment, retinal degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts. All myopes (especially -3 and up) should have a dilated eye exam with an eye doctor every year. And if you experience sudden onset of floaters or flashes of light, see an ophthalmologist (preferably a retinal specialist) ASAP to make sure you don’t have a retinal tear! We debunked the misconception myopia is a benign condition a few weeks ago on a webinar hosted by the Refractive Surgery Alliance.
