L. V. Beethoven Sonata No. 6 in A Major, Op. 30, No. 1 Sonata No. 7 in C Minor, Op. 30, No. 2... Christina Mok, Violin and Max Bragado-Darman, Piano LUDWIG van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) 250th Anniversary of His Birth German Composer of the Classical Era You can hardly beat a program of two magnificent Beethoven sonatas for violin and piano duo which depict contrasting natures of the master. Along with sonata no. 8, these sonatas (nos. 6 and 7) comprise Opus 30 composed between 1801 and 1802 and dedicated to Tsar Alexander I of Russia. The former sonata depicts Beethoven’s gift for lyric beauty and tenderness. The latter typifies Beethoven’s sense of drama and heroic conquest associated with compositions that he wrote in C minor tonality. Both are virtuosic with highly expressive slow movements (adagios). This is vintage music belonging to Beethoven’s middle period known as Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress) in which many movements in a composition are generated and permeated by a single melodic or rhythmic motive.

More Information and program notes can be found at www.noontimeconcerts.org click "Concert Details". This week's concert is a recording of a live concert from October 2, 1018, and features Tom Stone, violin; Tanya Tomkins, cello; and Eri...c Zivian, piano. The trio plays Felix Mendelssohn: Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 49 and Franz Joseph Haydn: Piano Trio in E Major, H. XV. 28, Movement 2, Allegretto Program notes were written by Carl Blake: FELIX MENDELSSOHN (1809-1847) German Composer, Conductor, Pianist, Organist, and Violinist of the Romantic Era Felix Mendelssohn’s youthful accomplishments were unrivaled, eclipsing even the precocious talents of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. Having written four operas, concertos, symphonies, cantatas, and piano music by the age of sixteen, his early display of genius is unparalleled in the entire history of music. As he matured, the hallmarks of his compositional style became fecundity of ideas, technical ease, mastery of form and content, flawless craftsmanship and immediate accessibility. Being, perhaps, the most beloved composer of his day, he was considered close to divine. His music was universally adored. Robert Schumann, a contemporary pianist/composer of the highest stature, characterized Mendelssohn as perfection itself. The piano trio of today’s online concert is proof of all the above. The first movement is in classic sonata form with exposition, development, and recapitulation of various musical ideas and motives. In Mendelssohn’s music, there is almost invariably a song destined to unfold. The movement opens with a longing melody in the cello accompanied by syncopated (agitated) chords in the piano part. The second movement is a tranquil, melodious short melody, a kind of song without words that Mendelssohn was fond of writing for solo piano but in this case joined by violin and cello. The scherzo is typical Mendelssohn with light, fleeting rhythmic motives presented throughout interspersed with a more lyrical middle section that resembles material from the first movement. The finale is full of technical display contrasted by more songful moments. This masterpiece is a staple of piano trio repertoire.

Since Noontime Concerts live performances are postponed for now as we all shelter in place. We are now offering curated recorded programs from our Noontime Concerts archives. This week we are featuring Hilda Huang, Piano Program... L.V. Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 29 in B flat Major, Op. 106, Hammerklavier LUDWIG van BEETHOVEN German Composer of the Classical Era (1750-1827) 250th Anniversary of His Birth Grand Sonata for Hammerklavier (Fortepiano) Op. 106 is the twenty-ninth of thirty-two sonatas composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. The work is a celebration of the piano itself by one of the most phenomenal musical intellects of all time. As Beethoven’s longest, grandest, and most difficult piano compositions, nothing created before or after by anyone surpasses its monumentality. The Hammerklavier sonata is a work that displays all that is quintessentially Beethovenian: drama, emotion, humor, wit, expressivity, convention-defying, musical logic, virtuosity, exultation, humanism, pianistic muscularity, and ravishing lyricism. Written in the third and last period of his life, Beethoven remains true to his classical roots in this visionary work even though he stretches and relaxes the rules to the extreme.
