Real talk, Kim. It’s 2300 hrs. Many people ask me where I get my positive energy from. My response effective today has been that it’s pain that I use as fuel which I’ve learned to converge to positivity and gratitude...and never losing your sense of humor.

The more we wait, the more we lose. Imagine if we lived in a world where getting help as a first responder was as normal as qualifying at the range. It actually is, but stigmas get in the way. First responders typically ignore what they see & their reactions to them. Research continues to demonstrate that such denial of emotions & appearance of the need to be tough leads to significantly higher levels of psychological distress in police officers & firefighters. Due to the imp...ortance of peer acceptance, first responders may look to peers to see if they are experiencing similar emotions & impacts of daily stressors from the job. When peers also hide their normal psychological & physical reactions, the first responder feels shame, embarrassment & believes he or she is alone in this experience, leading to further isolation. We live in a treatment-averse subculture, which reduces the willingness to get the appropriate treatment when needed. When we try to normalize abnormal events & avoid emotional expression, it further predisposes first responders to the impacts of trauma & the consequences of problematic/maladaptive coping (substance abuse/affairs/social withdrawal/irresponsible spending & other high risk behaviors). In 2019, more officers died by suicide than in the line of duty. This is true of the last 3 years. Give yourself permission to get help when needed. Take care of your partners. It’s OK to not be OK! @nypd

It was an absolute honor to have been a guest at the El Monte Police Christmas party. Grateful for the graciousness, hospitality, warmth and sincerity of this department and the kindness they’ve shown. Great things are coming! The bar has been set, we’re going to do right by our first responders in this country. God bless America! The significance of peer support cannot be overstated. Just as you’d never abandon your partner requesting assistance, it’s equally important to not abandon yourself. It’s OK to not be OK sometimes. Getting help is a sign of strength, not weakness! Action steps are required to #stayinthefight - it’s not just a hashtag! #choosetolive
