Neighborhood Thrift

Like many businesses, we were forced to shutter our public-facing social enterprises in response to the growing crisis of the pandemic. Faced with the uncertainty of knowing how long we would need to stay closed, we searched for a way to keep our employees in a financially stable situation by providing meaningful work. We also looked at ways that we could create jobs for people in our community that had been impacted by the pandemic, while also working to combat a growing con...cern for so many people: food insecurity. Addressing food insecurity, creating jobs, and providing stability for people impacted by the pandemic were essential to the development of Fresno Cares. Giving people a choice about the food they got to take home was an important factor in the way we developed this program. In the middle of a life-changing situationlosing a job, battling illness, a global pandemicit can feel as though you have no control over your situation, as though every choice is being made for you. For people facing food insecurity, a one-size-fits-all food distribution program could’ve become another situation to make them feel powerless. Fresno boasts a diverse cultural population, and we wanted our food program to reflect that, by providing people with culturally competent food boxes, filled with products they would be familiar with and want to eat. Finally, we’d like to thank everyone in our community and all our partners for the time, energy, and love invested in making this program a success! We couldn’t have done any of this work without every member we were lucky enough to have on our team. In a year that was truly one of the most difficult to endure for so many, the people of this community pulled together to make something special happen. Thanks to the amazing folks @midtownfresno, Neighborhood Thrift has a fresh coat of paint! We appreciate you all for helping us prepare to reopen! Speaking of reopening, we want to be sure that when we open our doors it is a safe and healthy environment for the shoppers.
