NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope 11.11.2020

ICYMI: This account will become ExploreAstro at Caltech/IPAC on November 2! Caltech/IPAC has been the Spitzer Science Center's home since 1997 so we're VERY familiar with the #SpitzerLegacy. With the mission over, we plan to share even more amazing astronomy here. Stay tuned!

Cosmic Eyes Without A Face When you look up at the night sky, do you ever feel like someone is looking back at you? Lurking in constellation Aquila, these celestial eyeballs (known as N89 and N90) are vast bubbles of dust and gas from new stars. http://www.spitzer.caltech.edu//2198-ssc2019-16-Spitzer-Sp

Coming Soon: ExploreAstro at Caltech/IPAC! We're planning a big change. On Nov. 2, this account will become ExploreAstro--a final step in Spitzer's end of mission. What won't change are the amazing multimedia astrophysics stories. We hope you'll continue the journey with us.

When Spitzer spied these nebulae, they seemed to look right back at us! Nebula is Latin for cloud. Just like with Earth’s clouds, we can see all sorts of faces and shapes. What mysterious creature do you see lurking in the dust and gas? Draw it! http://www.spitzer.caltech.edu/design-a-ghoul

One of Spitzer's last observations helped scientists confirm and characterize the atmosphere of exoplanet LTT9779 b, which not only shouldn't exist, but also shouldn't have an atmosphere. #SpitzerLegacy http://www.spitzer.caltech.edu//2337-partner104-Data-revea

Dead galaxies, gamma rays and dark matter? This isn’t science fiction these are real astrophysical phenomena. Now these creepy cosmic happenings are on fang-t...astic posters in English and Spanish. Googly or Ghoulish? Do you see the creepy eyes of a frightful fiend? Or the glowing peepers of a cute jack-o-lantern? Have some #NASAHalloween fun with this Spitzer infrared image of Milky Way nebulae in the Design A Ghoul app! http://www.spitzer.caltech.edu/design-a-ghoul

Spitzer's Solo Act This infrared view of the Milky Way's galactic center taken by Spitzer revealed glowing clouds of dust containing complex structures that were previously unseen in other wavelengths. Now, as part of the Sounds from Around the Milky Way sonification project, this image can be both seen and heard. Sonification is the process of translating positions and brightness in the telescope's image into different intensities and volumes. This is the first time users h...ave been able to "listen" to the center of the Milky Way as observed in X-ray, optical, and infrared light. You can hear the optical and X-ray components by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray Observatory at https://chandra.si.edu/photo/2020/sonify. Learn more about how astronomers sonified these space images at #AskTheAstronomersLIVE today (Oct. 15) at 4:30pm ET/1:30pm PT. Listen up! Though our galaxy's center is ~26,000 light-years away, assigning sounds to data from Chandra X-ray Observatory, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, and NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope brings it closer to home. Sonification also allows audiences, including blind and visually impaired communities, to hear astronomical images and explore their data.... Learn more about sonification at #AskTheAstronomersLIVE! Thursday, Oct. 15 at 4:30pm ET/1:30pm PT UniverseUnplugged.org Fun Fact: The arrangement's crescendo happens at the lower-right area of the image where the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy, known as Sagittarius A*, resides. This is the same black hole studied by Dr. Andrea Ghez, who was awarded the #NobelPrize2020 for Physics last week.

From comet composition to the atmospheric properties of Uranus and Neptune, Spitzer unlocked mysteries of both the distant universe as well as our own solar system. NASA's James Webb Space Telescope will build on the #SpitzerLegacy. https://www.ucf.edu//3-ucf-researchers-part-of-nature-ast/

Andrea Ghez was part of the team that published the Spitzer data! The Spitzer team optimized the spacecraft to take the maximum amount of images of the Milky Way black hole, Sgr A*, during the monitoring periods. http://www.spitzer.caltech.edu//1892-feature16-11-Seeing-t

Discovery Alert! Spitzer and #NASATESS observations found WD 1856+534 b, the first intact exoplanet found to be closely orbiting a white dwarf, which is the dense remains of a star that was similar to our own Sun. https://www.nasa.gov//nasa-missions-spy-first-possible-su/
